Deep Fish

Microsoft just released a beta of their new web browser called Deep Fish. It runs on Windows Mobile 5 Smart Phones and Pocket Pc's. There are limited trial spots available so you should probably hurry. I'm trying it out right now and I am kinda digging it. I can't post hyperlinks so check out on10 . net

josh33_unc 03-29-2007 01:15 AM

i just downloaded this on my sprint 6700. its cool to browse and all, but you cant log in, like i cant get into my account on sprintusers.com, so its cool to browse sites, but thats about it, so far, now since this is a trial, maybe the finished and later developments of it will have more upgrades and fix the bugs and issues that this trial one has.

Here's the link http://labs.live.com/deepfish/default.aspx and the file. Maybe I'll get some screenshots up later. I always look forward to new browsers.

I'm loving this! I can't believe this is just a beta too. I'll definitely be playing with this a lot.

LadySaat 03-29-2007 02:01 AM

I have it too. Very cool. Limited right now, hopefully will be fully fleshed out when final released. I am trying to find the posts again on how to flash new ROM in Vista right now, then I will put deepfish back on after new ROM settles in.

So many things to play with... I love my phone.

dannzeman 03-29-2007 02:09 AM

So here is a pick of it in the start menu:

This is when the browser is first opened after you enter the 16 digit registration code M$ gives you.

A few details.

Home, shrunken to include the whole page.

Zooming in:

Navigating around the page. Note the smaller, transparent, rendition of the page in the upper right corner.

One of my favorite sites. A few things don't quite turn out like they should but thats because this in beta. The link selection is cool in that you press the dpad once then up/down/left/right to move to all the links on the page.

Quick search from the Navigate button on the left.

A few details about what is Deep Fish and zooming from the project site:
Quote:

What is Deepfish?

Deepfish is a mobile browsing Technology Preview from Microsoft Live Labs. Deepfish displays content in a view that is closer to the desktop experience. The zoom-able interface and cue map allow you to quickly access the information you care about over the web without ever losing track of where you are.

How do I Zoom-In and Zoom-Out?

* ZOOM-IN
o Press the joystick to enable the grey view port; notice that the menu changes to Zoom-in and Zoom-out.
o Press the joystick or press the enter button (with view port enabled) to zoom into the area of focus.
o You can now navigate (Left, Right, Up and Down) the web page using the joystick or directional keypad
* ZOOM-OUT
o From zoomed-in mode, hold the joystick or directional keypad until the border changes from green to gray
o Release the joystick to zoom-out
o Press and hold again to hide gray view port
o If the above approach does not work, press the Back/Del key

Note: In zoomed-in mode a CUE-MAP is shown on the upper right corner; CUE-MAP shows your current zoomed-in location on the webpage. You can turn this feature ON or OFF via the menu options.

* PANNING
o Move joystick (Up, Down, Left and Down) to navigate the web page

I used your download, but don't have an activation code, and can't get one at MS?

luv2chill 03-29-2007 04:46 AM

Yeah they've hit their max new user count. But keep checking your e-mail box... they've stated that they will allow more users periodically. Since this involves a lot of server-side processing, you can see why they need to keep a handle on the number of people using the service in these early stages. I'm sure it won't be long before we're all deepfishing. :)

It's a neat app for sure. Thunderhawk's WM business is about to plummet ;)

Trident 03-29-2007 09:13 AM

Looks interesting.
I hope that they do add some people to the "limited invite-only beta testing" soon.

TechnoHippie 03-29-2007 04:48 PM

ok anyone wanna share a 16digy code wif meeeee?

victor_3365@yahoo.com

zlich 03-29-2007 05:19 PM

anyone willing to share "the 16 digit activation id"???
microsoft says

Thanks you for your interest in Deepfish; At this time the tech preview has reached the limit of initially available installations. We will send you a notification if we make additional spots available at a later date.

please email at zlichmachine at gmail dot com

pdx77 03-29-2007 05:23 PM

So far I love it, I just wish it supported cookies and java script. But it's a good start.

I'm just waiting for Opera Mobile 9 to come out which will have similar features to this.

LOL. I was actually wondering why they would go ahead and release a product like this that's missing some important features. There's no Forward command either.

zlich 03-29-2007 05:33 PM

nevermind ... i found it in one of my other fav ppc site
here's the code if someone's looking for it.

luv2chill 03-29-2007 05:33 PM

What do you expect Hippie? It's a technology preview. I don't think we have any indication that this is anywhere close to a final release. I'm sure they just want to get some real-world testing on the underlying tech.

TechnoHippie 03-29-2007 06:26 PM

hey zlich - what's that other site?

pdx77 03-29-2007 06:51 PM

Does that code still work for anyone? It quit working for me about a half hour ago.

anyone with working DeepFish care to share their registry key data found in:

\HKLM\Software\Microsoft\DeepFish
Entry: ActivationID

It may enable others DeepFish if we copy the same hex

mine is (not working):

Chuck 03-30-2007 02:16 PM

Yes, unfortunately I'm in the same boat. I used the 5202744683210565 code and it appears to have stopped validating last night. If anyone has a working code that they don't mind sharing but would rather it not show up in a google search than PM or email me at: code at charlestrombley dot com.

Thanks!

TheRocoLoco 03-30-2007 03:18 PM

once activated do you stay activated? I found a key that is working at least for the moment =)

TechnoHippie 03-30-2007 04:24 PM

If too many people start using the same activation key - then it's turned off - and everyone using that key is scrwed.

EtherealRemnant 03-30-2007 05:18 PM

Yeah you guys should really stop being so damn impatient and just wait for the final version.

Besides, all you can do at this point is browse..... that's pretty damn retarded.

this is not a bad idea... could someone please post up their info(after activation)

EtherealRemnant 03-30-2007 08:04 PM

dannzeman, why are you quoting me? I'm not complaining about it being a preview and I am fully aware what a tech preview is, which is why I'm saying that all these people trying to run circles around the activation and crap is totally pointless at this point...

dannzeman 03-30-2007 10:55 PM

Ethereal, i'm not singling you out specifically. I was just trying to make a point to all those that are complaining about it and the lack of features it has. They don't seem to understand the preview part of it. Unfortunately, I had to use your quote. I didn't mean to offend you, no hard feelings.

The internet is a lot more than browsing.

I'd say over 80% of all websites on the internet have a place to login somewhere.

Ajax is everywhere.

I'm really not going to get into it but the only thing that downloading this at this stage is going to be good for... is bragging rights. Nothing else.

And then as you all go along and start activating multiple devices with the same keys, you're going to kill off those keys too.

It seems obvious to me that some of you are unhappy with the capabilities that Deepfish provides. If this software is so "limited," then I would glady take the an activation code off your hands. I for one wasn't lucky enough to sign up early... but that doesn't mean I don't want the opportunity to the very least play around with it.

Anyways if your feeling generous PM me... it would be greatly appreciated.:D

I strongly agree that you need to have more support than basic html to use the web.

What you also should mention is that Javascript is used extensively -- more so than Ajax. Many sites base their page navigation on Javascript. A lot of Javascript activity is invisible to the user - posting the current date, opening a new window, displaying a warning on incorrect form data, etc. that people often don't realize that their pages are full of Javascript. The fact that Pocket IE didn't support Javascript or Ajax crippled Pocket IE -- it's more than a WAP browser but can't display or navigate many HTML/Javascript sites. Microsoft should be addressing these issues as the base functionality of the preview release, not trying to out-GUI Apple's demos.

Real-time zooming and panning is a gimmick that has historically been used to grab software customers attention (I've seen demos focusing on nothing more than real time zooming and panning going all the way back to the engineering workstations of the 1980s!)

Besides, the 'click on the thumbnail view' methodology in Deepfish has a fundamental flaw -- many times, even the largest headline text on the thumbnail view is too small to read in order to select a region to zoom-in. You might as well just throw a dart at the thumbnail to select a zoom region. This methodology works great in navigating a map (such as Live Search or Google Maps) because even a small map thumbnail contains enough information for a user to make an accurate initial selection (it's much easier to view major highways on a thumbnail view than it is to view 2-pixel headlines in a thumbnail view.)

The second problem with Deepfish is that often when you zoom-in to read a column of text, the selection box misses and cuts off the right (or left) side of the column. The next zoom-out increment is too large and ruins the visibility of the text in the column. If you can't automatically fit the column width into a zoom-in view, you're left with a flashy demo that doesn't provide better functionality.

Check out the Minimo .2 thread (yes, Minimo development has been restarted). Those guys have gone in the opposite direction of Deepfish - no impressive zooming, but lots of functionality in their release.

Wow, this from a guy with 33 posts, most negative. I dont want to get into a p*ssing match here, but cmon. If you dont like it, either use something different like opera/minimo/whatever, or go use a real PC.

Come back after your nap so you arent so cranky.

DAMBRO24 04-01-2007 06:43 PM

I WANTED TO TRY IT OUT. WHEN IS MS GOING TO LET MORE USERS, TEST THIS OUT?

HOW MUC DO YOU THINK THIS WILL BE OR WILL IT BE INCLUDED IN THE WM6 UPGRADE?
