Car Cradle for PPC 6700 with Charging (mini USB)

Hi
Been searching for this one for a while with no luck. I am really looking for a easy and aestheric pleasing solution to place (dock) my ppc6700 in my car.

There are several solutions which allow you to place it in the holder and then you slip a cable into the jack. Thats really cumbersome and I would much rather leave it on the seat and connect the usb wire for charging in that case.

what I am really looking for is something very similar to the desktop USB cradle, with the mini-USB jack that attaches to the phone as you put it in.

Anyone know if something like that exists? I tried ebay but the very few that are available dont seem to have comptability for the ppc 6700.

I've always thought these looked like a good inexpensive alternative to the Seidio unit. Doesn't have all the features, but if docking and power are all you're looking for it'll get the job done.

ugh, the one I got was broken (the usb connector was at an angle. It's held in position by glue...and the ppc sticks up from the base (back). I wouldn't trust this unit to hold the ppc in the car, though not owning the seidio I can't say if it's any better.

Hey there. Here is what I did and it works perfectly. I was inspired by some other guys at another forum.

Go to proclipusa(dot)com Get the 4th generation padded IPOD holder. Yes, I know it seems odd, but you will never find a better fit than this. It will hold an uncovered ipod with or without extended battery perfectly.

I then took a spare mini-usb cable, a small "L" bracket from home depot and some JB Weld kwik-weld. What I did was to cover the bottom of my phone with masking tape and set the above hardware all together with the cable in the phone. After letting it set, I pulled the phone off and removed the masking tape.

I now have a perfectly smooth powered cable for the 6700 that is barely noticable when not in use.

I tucked the wire straight into the dashboard so it is completely invisible.

As for power source, it depends upon your saavy. You could just use a usb-port cigarette adapter. I used an old arkon PDA mount that I had that safely split the 12V into three different 5V ports. One is for my BT GPS, one for the 6700, and one to charge my BT headset. All wires are tucked away nicely.

It was a bit of work, but I think it was well worth it...I'll try to post a pic in a little bit.

-Josh

Josh,

Thats sure sounds like a lot of work. I would think there would be good market for this.

I have heard about the Ipod adapter being a good fit to hold the ppc. Strange but true.

Would love to see some pictures when you get a moment.

Bobc: Cant use that in the car man.!! no room to put it anywhere, although I have been so tempted to make a bracket of sorts around the OEM version just to make the PPC sit secure. Everything else is perfect anyway.

Anyone have any ideas?

Why wouldn't you use the one on ProClipUSA(dot)com that is made for the PPC-6700? there are 3 options. I have the simple holder and use my car charger when necessary. It holds well even in my 4x4 offroading days... This just seems like a more logical solution rather than jerry-rigging something else.

I like the look of their basic unit for $35. Combine that with a car charger and you're all set.

Here's a related question for you all. Has anyone sucessfully used a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter to connect regular headphones, a cassette adapters, or an FM modulator to their XV6700? The headphones that come with it include a microphone so I'm not sure whether the adapter will work or not.

With one of those holders, a car charger, and an FM modulator the MP3 player would be a heck of a lot more useful in the car....

BobC-

For the 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter, I recommend stopping in your local Cingular store. Pick up the adapter for the Motorola Rokr. (Should be $5.95 if I remember right.) It works perfectly on my tape adapter, portable speakers, and headphones.

RadioShack claims to sell similar adapters. NONE OF THEM work! Don't waste your money.

If you are looking for one with a built-in mic, try seidioonline(dot)com. They sell one with a mic for about $12. I guess you could use your car speakers for a 'speakerphone', but I haven't tried that yet.

If you find a workable FM modulator, let me know. The one I bought from BestBuy was crap. I'm leary about buying another.
