UPDATED: Manually Update To Sprint PRL 20224

4 Attachment(s)
I am going to tell you how to manually update your phones PRL (Preferred Roaming Location) so you can avoid going through CS.

1. Have your MSL code handy*
2. Download the PRL file
3. Unzip onto your phone
4. In phone, type ##775#, enter MSL code
5. Tap Update PRL, Then click edit
6. Select Browse, then click the file
7. Press Ok, Ok, Yes
8. Press Ok to reset the device

* If you need your MSL Code do this.
Call Sprint. Go to Activations line and get ahold of a human being. Tell them you are programming your phone and need your MSL code. They should give it to you no questions asked

There you are done. You have just manually updated your phone to the latest Sprint PRL without having to listen to CSR telling you your phone is already updated.

Wideawake 05-27-2006 04:31 PM

I tried updating the prl through sprint over the phone and never gotit took work. Thought I was gonna have to carry it to the sprint store to do that. Not no more! Thx cac9478, and nice write up!

cac9478 05-27-2006 05:07 PM

I think sprint's csr are just lazy. I call up there and they tell me my prl is updated and it wasnt but there was no getting through to these people. So i found the file and upgraded it myself.

wingzero 05-27-2006 05:18 PM

Nice find, cac9478. Thanks.

Wideawake 05-27-2006 05:26 PM

yea a bunch of them are just lazy I had one on the line once that said he could switch m to sero puts me on hold for 30 mins comes back and says just alittle longer and hangs up on me! ugh it makes me so mad. but I got a rep that had worked there for 4 months ans switched my plan right over no problem in like 20 mins. So I try not to call thems!
~Mike

Wideawake 06-16-2006 04:58 PM

bump. prl has been updated.

Malatesta 06-16-2006 05:12 PM

PRL: 20222

it's funny, this is the ONLY way I can update my PRL and if it wasn't for this method, I'd still be using my 650!

Seriously, I was stuck on 20216 forever w/o any OTA success. I finally took it to a Sprint store and they couldn't even do it there.

Like hell was I going to go through Sprint support...I could school those guys on this phone.

having said that, unfortunatlly 20222 didn't increase my reception at work...damn.

Still it's worth it and I'll probably get better evdo somewhere around NY/NYC

bunnytrigger 06-17-2006 12:35 AM

works like a charm, it actualy expanded my coverage area here in jonesboro, AR :D

rennyn 06-17-2006 01:14 AM

Remember.. this is a Preferred ROAMING List. It will not affect your native Sprint coverage whatsoever. Only your roaming.

Not quite Rennyn...

From Chris Price (pcsintel) and I've seen this elsewhere, though it IS true that on a 1x device it only affects roaming, on evdo it is slightly more complicated:

Quote:

Keeping the PRL up-to-date is not critical. However, savvy users chose to update their PRLs because it provides for faster roaming signal acquisition, improved international roaming, and, on EV-DO devices, better acquisition of EV-DO data services.

Quote:

On EV-DO devices it can add HDR channels, which can improve EV-DO data coverage. If Sprint is or will be deploying additional HDR channels not in the PRL in unlaunched markets is unknown at this time, so, it is best to keep the PRL up-to-date on EV devices.--C. Price
Quote:

Unlike PRLs in older devices, EV-DO PRL files may make modifications to the available HDR channels, improving EV-DO signal acqusition.

I'm not saying it will gurantee a difference but you never know...

Sonin66 06-17-2006 11:14 AM

worked like a charm again.

rennyn 06-20-2006 01:15 AM

Why is this PRL like 1/4 the size of 20221?

not sure, but i know there was some serious issues with 20221 in regards to roaming, so maybe they're more effiecient or made some serious adjustments. there was a report from sprint that said people should avoid 20221...

just guessing here. :?:

wingzero 06-20-2006 10:09 PM

Dame! Rep refuse to give me the msl code. Dialed *2 and said I need MSL code to program my phone and got transfered to tech support. The guy at tech support refuse to give it to me and said if I need to program my phone, he could walk me through the process. Think ecare will let me have it? :x

pzztgotbagz 06-20-2006 10:17 PM

wingzero just call back ask them to walk you through the steps and right after they say ## write down the next six number and just hang up this is your msl..the six numbers that follow will be ur msl

wingzero 06-20-2006 10:27 PM

oh, I did let him walk me through the process and wrote down that ##xxxxxx# numbers. So this is my msl number, huh? two ## with six numbers than #, right? Please confirm so I could go ahead and update my PRL. Thanks. I was surprised when the guy said that I am not up for a PRL update yet. May be even he didn't know that there's an update. :D

pzztgotbagz 06-20-2006 10:32 PM

yes those six numbers are your msl

Malatesta 06-20-2006 10:35 PM

it's actually just the six numbers, but yeah.

there's only one way to find out which is by trying to enter the config menu.

If it's not the MSL number, you don't get in! lol

if it is, you can just cancel out and close the program. no biggy.

it's good to have though so that you can ditch the no data interruption thing with the ROM udpate (where if you have an active data connection, all calls go to VM, which is crap).

pzztgotbagz 06-20-2006 10:39 PM

hey maltesta what steps did u do so that u could get rid of the data interruption thing in the new rom?

wingzero 06-20-2006 10:41 PM

That's it. PLR 20222 updated!!! Thanks guy.

pzztgotbagz 06-20-2006 11:04 PM

Did ya do it via this method?

Hack: Enable Incoming Calls During EV-DO
To receive incoming calls while in an active EV-DO (Power Vision) data session, and are running firmware 2.06.00 or later, you will need to perform a master reset of the device. Dial ##786# into the phone like a regular phone number, then proceed to reset the device using the option displayed. This will require your MSL, which you will have to get from Sprint customer service. If you have never done this before, it's best to have technical support walk you through performing a master reset, and then reprogramming the phone. The master reset will erase all data (and settings) on the device. This will then allow for incoming calls while in an EV-DO data session, however, in a 1xRTT (Vision) data session calls will still be redirected to voicemail.

Wideawake 06-20-2006 11:18 PM

ya I'm sure that's the one, I should have added it to the rom upgrade instructions, but didn't realize till later. did u cut and paste that? I will try and rewrite it and add to the rom upgrade tutorial.
Thx,
Mike

pzztgotbagz 06-20-2006 11:22 PM

yes i did copy and paste it.

That's it.

It's obviously best to do it after the ROM upgrade since it requires a hard-reset () so if you can wait, do it when you're good and ready to do a new fresh install on your device.

Works well though.

Here are more detailed directions:

1. You need 3 numbers: The MDN (which is your cell phone number), the MSID, and the MSL. I called Sprint to get both the MSID and MSL numbers, though maybe there's a way to get them off of your phone?

2. Perform a reset by typing ##786# from the phone app. Be warned that this is a full hard reset, and will wipe all data.

3. After the reset is done and the device is booting, it automatically installs all the "customization" cabs. I let this finish completely, which took about 5 minutes.

4. Next, I re-programmed my MDN and MSID by typing ##XXXXXX# from the phone app. The "X"s in this case is your MSL number. (should be 6 digits I believe)

Finally, I went into settings --> phone --> services --> internet and then tapped "start" to begin the IOTA process. This took a few minutes.

After doing all this, incoming calls now interrupt my EVDO sessions. I'm not sure if there are better ways to get this done, but this is what I did and it worked for me.

I dont mind that u did copy and paste, I was just wondering. Malatesta you mind if I add those instructions you just posted to the upgrade thread?

Knock yourself out! (I didn't write it, ) There is a link at the bottom of the quote that is difficult to see, but you can cite that person as the source or just that whole thread. :thumbright:

once the file is updated and the phone reset, the PRL file can be deleted right?

Sonin66 06-24-2006 03:35 AM

yea you can delete the prl file.

Big D5 06-25-2006 09:23 AM

I got it

No problem getting my MSL just told the CS rep I was programming my phone, didn?t ask me if I needed help with programming till after he gave me the MSL. This was EZ and now I have my MSL for other uses. Thanks!!

wizard64 06-30-2006 10:46 AM

20222?

Ok, since it wasn't addressed, I'm left to assume that it's a sensitive issue where I'd aquire the 20222 file...

Big D5 08-05-2006 09:45 AM

Going to make this a sticky for a couple of days as this has been updated there is a new prl. cac has updated the prl file. :thumbright:

wingzero 08-05-2006 10:41 PM

Man I can't keep up with all these PRL update. How often does sprint update these PRL?

worldaviator 08-14-2006 01:43 AM

Easy enough!

Excellent instructions for upgrading to PRL 20223!

Thanks!
WA

NinjaMom 08-14-2006 10:25 AM

I keep calling customer service and it says it is automatically updating my PRL... but it never does...

NinjaMom 08-14-2006 10:52 AM

Ok... I got my MSL code and I can get to the point where you browse for the file... but my phone won't pull up any .prl files. When I search through all of the files I don't see the new PRL file.

Where exactly should I put the prl file on my phone and should I unzip it first or after it is on my phone?

Thanks
