in WM5, these bars weren't there - the text on the bars simply was placed over the background image. I'm using the exact same .tsk file as before, and now they overlay on top of my background image.

I just looked into those, and as near as I can tell, they remove the contents of the task bar and the soft button bar. I'm not trying to remove them - I just don't want that region colored differently over my background image. I'm positive this didn't happen either on my stock Verizon ROM or a custom WM5 ROM - the contents of those bars just got placed over the background image.

That's interesting. I've never heard of a way to make the bars transparent. Or barring that, to use a portion of a picture so that it looks like a continuation of the today wallpaper. That could be kinda cool. Let us know if you find anything.
