Setting up and Using Wmwifirouter

Could someone give a brief detailed description of how to setup and use Wmwifirouter ?
I have the version .8 that came with the new flashed rom.
What SSID am I supposed to see and connect to ?
Are there any configuration options with this version ?
Is there any security ?
Is it an open network ?

Thanks....

Re: Setting up and Using Wmwifirouter

Greetings:

Have you followed this app over at xdadevelopers? Seems the author of this (Chainfire) released version .80 as freeware, so the notes below apply only to version .8. There is a freeware version .91 floating around, but all releases after that are commercial. The author has requested all freeware versions be removed from sites like this.

I respect the author's decision to do what he wishes, however anything released as freeware prior to the commercial release is still freeware, IMHO.

You MUST make sure ICS is working before you use WMwifirouter. It does not have to be turned on (the app does this for you), however just make sure ICS is working, then you can disconnect.

For version 0.8 only: (credit to original thread at xda developers and Chainfire):

Setting up an Ad Hoc WiFi connection on your mobile device

Make sure your WiFi radio is on.
Go to Start->Settings->"Connections" tab.
Select "Wi-Fi" applet.
On the "Wireless" tab, select "Add New...".

Type any network name you would like for your Ad Hoc network (eg. WMobileAdHoc)
Make sure the "This is a device-to-device (ad-hoc) connection" option is checked.

Select the "Next" button.
On the "Configure Network Authentication" screen, select "Open" for the Authentication type, and "Disabled" for Data Encryption. For the purposes of testing, lets verify the connection works without encryption, if it does, you can modify your Ad Hoc connection properties later to enable the encryption mode of your choice.

Select the "Next" button.
Select "Finish" on the final screen.

Configuring a static IP address on your WiFi device
Go to Start->Settings->"Connections" tab.
Select the "Wi-Fi" applet.
On the "Network Adapters" tab, select your WiFi device (for the HTC Mogul this is the item listed as "IEEE 802.11b/g Compatible Wi-Fi Adapter").

On the "IP Address" tab, select the "Use specific IP address" radio button. For the IP address enter the value "192.168.0.9" with a Subnet mask of "255.255.255.0".

OK the dialog.

****end snip***

Good luck. I do have a copy of .91 and it does all the config stuff for you.

Re: Setting up and Using Wmwifirouter

It all looks and sounds good, but when do I run the Wmwifirouter program itself (after executing all the instructions you mentioned or before ?)
In addition, the ICS runs but when teethered to my PC via usb, the computer saids it has detected new hardware and is asking for drivers...I'm running Win2k....
I found ver .91 somewhere but have ver .8 installed oalln the phone. I don't suppose I could install over the old version without messing anything up. The old version is part of the upgrade rom, so I would have to reflash my phone to uninstall it.
As far as the instructions are concerned, should my computer be connecting to a wifi network since mine is already configured in it and connects automatically.
Also, when I'm adding the static ip, should I leave the "default gateway" blank ? I thought the ip of the phone should be the default gateway ?

Thanks....

Re: Setting up and Using Wmwifirouter

OK, see if you can use ICS first. I believe active sync must be installed on your PC and running before you connect your 6700. If your OS is asking to install drivers, let it. My experience is with XP so I can't specifically address the driver issue.

Can you sync between your 6700 and your PC now? Do you have any problems accessing the internet (on your phone) thru your carrier? (*not thru wifi*) If you can access the internet, try connecting them and then running ICS on your 6700. You will know ICS is working when you can access the internet on your PC..but just to be sure, disconnect your wired and wireless connections from your PC to make sure your PC is actually using the 6700. You my need drivers for W2k, so try and find them (google), there may be posts here addressing this.

All the instructions I posted previously are done BEFORE running the Wmwifi router app. I, too have ver .80 installed from the kitchen, however running the app (ver .80) really does not "install" anything . I removed the shortcut to ver .80, and installed .91 thru a cab file. No problems. As I said, .91 does the configuring for you. You do *not* have to reflash, just dont run the version installed to your rom, run the new version of Wmwifi router.

After launching the wmwifi app, then attempt to establish a wireless connection to your PC. Just to be sure, disable the wireless router you are using to make sure the PC is accessinf wifi thru the phone. Your PC must be set to establish an "adhoc" connection, you will see "WMWifirouter" or something similar on your PC by your WIFi software.

The only drawback to either app is that I had to manually remove the adhoc connection created (by the app in .91 or manually for .80) when I was finished using wmwifi router. There was no real issue but when trying to use wifi normally, the now "dormant" wmwifirouter adhoc connection listed itself several times in the network discovery window (wm6) and for me, was annoying. I believe (but am by no means sure) the newer paid for versions of Wmwifi router address this issue.

good luck

Re: Setting up and Using Wmwifirouter

Ok, I have a "Newbie" question since I'm not totally familiar with Windows Mobile, where are the shortcuts to the installed programs stored ?
I had a similar issue with 'SprintTV" and ended up with multiple shortcuts in my programs menu...

Thanks..

Re: Setting up and Using Wmwifirouter

I installed version .91 and it created a shortcut on top of the original....cool....so no duplicate shortcuts..
I ran it and it worked great as far as showing up in my list of wireless sites ssid's to connect to.
Is there a way to change the ssid in version .91 to something else...?
This is really cool otherwise ...
So, instead of teethering the phone to the laptop, I can just run the Wmwifirouter and get internet access....
It does create multiple instances of the ssid though as you mentioned......
As far as the ICS, the driver was in the ActiveSync directory but I didn't try to connect to the internet with the PC as of yet using that....
Am I suppose to get another network connection icon in the connections folder (On PC) when I use ICS with activesync on the PC ?
Last question, since I'm no longer running version .8, do I still need all of the steps that you mentioned before....? Couldn't get version .8 to work anyway....

Thanks...

Re: Setting up and Using Wmwifirouter

Shortcuts are created in \windows\start menu\programs.

There are a limited number of shortcuts you can put into \windows\start menu. Those will always appear at the top of your start menu, without having to open the "programs" folder on the start menu.

Yes, the extra steps I posted are only for earlier versions (I only tested .80 with this). With .91 they are, as you found, unnecessary.

I don't believe you will get another connection icon in your network connections folder on your PC when using ICS, but since I use wmodem when I tether I can't remember for sure about ICS, sorry. I do know ICS is using some sort of NAT so both your PC and phone should be able to use the internet simultaneously...hence the name "connection sharing".

Have fun.

Re: Setting up and Using Wmwifirouter

Ok, it wasn't really working at all. It only seemed to work because the wlan was connected to my wireless network and as soon as I disabled that - no connection.....
Now when it runs, it just sits there saying "Waiting for ICS" and never goes any further. Any ideas ?
I tried connecting it to my PC but that didn't seem to help either.
So the Wmwifirouter on the phone can't be a standalone or is something not configured properly ?
With the ICS, it's almost saying that another computer or connection is required before it will work...

Thanks..

Re: Setting up and Using Wmwifirouter

What is funny is, I have this setup on my mogul, and let it run without setting up the seperate WLAN settings, and my MAC just finds it and connects, no problem. with my vista laptop, forget it, nothing seems to work

Please try ICS first to see if it is setup OK.

Run active sync on your phone. Make sure 'enable USB" connection menu item is checked. Don't attach the phone to the PC yet. Make sure your phone is on, fire up IE and see if you can access the internet. Do you have a data plan? Might be a good idea to go to a site you have never been to before, or delete your cached files, to preclude loading a cached page.

Better yet, do you have a ping utility? VX Util (free) has one. You can eck your connectivity with ping.

Make sure you can sync with your PC using activesync. I asume you have it installed on your PC. Latest version is 4.5. Earlier versions had issues!

Connect the PC and phone. See if sync works. Then run ICS on the phone.

You should now be able to use your PC to access the internet. Again, disable all other net connex on your PC to make sure your phone is providing access.

Then run wmwifirouter.exe. .91 should not require any manual config.
hope you can get it working.

Edit: You might have to set up an "open" adhoc connection in your wifi applet (settings..connections..wifi) then start WmWifi router. I did not have to do this with .91, though. See the following posts on this.

I got mine to connect finally but my wireless computer that I'm trying to connect with doesn't obtain a usable ip address....just a 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address which means you have no valid connection and it gets no dns addresses either.... It saids connected to "Wmwifirouter" and nothing more.....
Is it something I'm missing or doing wrong ?

does ics connect when regularly tethering with usb or bluetooth? I set wmwifirouter to allocate dhcp address.

I have a question guys.. I recently did a warranty exchange on my 6800 and they sent me another one. I got the new one and I put version .91 on the phone and it worked great for a little while. I used it this past weekend out of town, and it just stopped working. At first, my computer just would not reconize it as a connection at all, then it finally started reconizing it but would not connect. It just keep saying connecting. I'm running XP. Will some one please help me......

I'm not sure if anyone can help with this. I too am having issues with wmwifirouter. It connects via ICS and I can connect to it on my Win XP machine but after a minute or so I get a self assigned IP address (169.254.x.x). Does anyone know how to correct this. Using PPC 6700 (Apache_Helmi_WM6.1).

Re: Setting up and Using Wmwifirouter

You might want to check

Setting/Connections/Wi-Fi/Network Adapters

go through the list of adapters and check the status "Use server-assigned IP address" or "Use specific IP address"

I always have to recheck this area, due to wifirouter changing the "tiacxwin Compatible Wireless Ethernet" adapters from "Use server-assigned IP address" to "Use specific IP address" and having issue when I want to connect using regular wifi to a hotspot..it will sit there all day trying to connect untill I change it back to "Use server-assigned IP address".

djfx 03-24-2008 05:49 PM

Re: Setting up and Using Wmwifirouter

I did notice that when it connects via wmwifirouter in the network settings it still has "User server assigned IP address." The IP address below it has 169.254.x.x (I don't remember the exact numbers for the 'x'). I tried changing it to Use Specific IP address and the PC still gets a self assigned IP address. Is there a way to manually enter an IP address in the registry that it will use?

I have the Nex rom with baked in WMWifi 0.9.1, does not seem to work, i test my ICS through usb with sucess, but when i run WMWifi it says its ready but i get no broadcast of a wireless signal on my laptop or any other devices. The v1 I just downloaded is a trial wondering how i remove the previous version if it was baked in?

djfx 03-28-2008 04:18 PM

Re: Setting up and Using Wmwifirouter

If you baked it with .91 then you would need to rebake without it I belive. I'm not sure if you can remove it from the extended roms area or not. I would just rebake and then install it again.

I keep having the following problem with .91. I get through the connect process, but it says WAITING FOR ICS at the end. So, I don't think it is binding with the WIFI connection. Strange thing is, it worked fine before. any thoughts?

I finally figured it out. You don't need to connect it to a computer but you'll need to connect it to some kind of usb source. I connected my mogul to my wall charger and it went through without a hitch. I started to figure it out when I was looking at ICS and it says that PC Connection was USB.

hi.. using .91. i can connect no problem and have full web functionality, but only over a non-secure method. when i change the security to Open Wep, i enter a five digit code, and then enter than same code on my laptop..
i can then get a secured wifi connection - but i can NOT get any web access.. IE just displays page not found.
i know i am missing something in my advanced network setup on my laptop. i've tried to manually enter the DNS and IP settings, but i still can't get web access..
again, i can establish a secure connection, but can't browse!

i can't seem to 'save' my settings on my wireless manager on the laptop, and i think this may be part of the problem in getting out on the secure connection.. (see attached picture)

anyone have any thoughts, or been through this before ?

Well, i'm really just hitting the connect button, and it goes through it's thing..
what i've found of course is, you must have the Internet Connection Sharing app on your phone.. unless you've cooked a custom rom, it MAY not be included on your stock version.
looks like there is a script that WMwifi runs through, last of which is to actually OPEN the ICS app.. this is the actual app that will allow your PC to connect through your device.. WMwifi just takes your existing WiFi and turns it into a 'router'.. but you will still need ICS to share your connection......

hope this helps?

Re: Setting up and Using Wmwifirouter

I figured out what the problem was for those of us who had the problem where it said, Connecting.....WLAN...Waiting for ICS....." After starting the program, I had to go into ICS and switch from Phone as Modem to Sprint PCS. Then it works without a hitch. Now I just need to ascertain how to tweek my settings so it is not so easy for sprint to tell I am tethering.

WMWifirouter automatically starts ICS (Internet Connection Sharing), if you have the new rom, use HTC Task Manager to minimize wmwifirouter and then switch to ICS. Then hit disconnect, click in the "pull down box" and switch to Sprint PCS. WMWifirouter should automatically reconnect and this time it should work like a charm. Hope this helps........

Man, as many times as I try this now, it just doesn't work for me anymore. I run WMWifirouter and then click connect. WIFI switch is on. But, I get to the WAITING FOR ICS dialogue, so I switch over to programs, not using HTC task manager since that causes crashes on my device. I select Sprint PCS and click on CONNECT. This is in ICS. It seems to be trying to connect and then I get an error 67. Go back to WMW and I THINK it has to be restarted and it doesn't work.

So, I start it again and it sits there at waiting for ICS. Usually I have to do IOTA again to get connected again. Or, a reboot.
