GPS navigation software
I'm looking into getting a portable GPS and stumbled upon this.
Our phone isn't listed, but quite a few similar ones are. Will this work with a WM6 Apache? If so, do I have to purchase an additional antenna or anything? |
Nope. Two reasons.
First, it looks like it comes on a regular SD card, and second, the 6700 isn't truly "GPS enabled". |
Well, I'll take it that #2 is correct and that kills that idea.
Thanks. I didn't know if all the GPS stuff might have become available with the WM6 ROMs. It does come on a miniSD card and with adaptors for SD. [Not like it would be that difficult to transfer the files onto a miniSD if it was a regular SD card...] |
Actually, a lot of these "pre-loaded" cards have copy protection. I have some Navteq maps for my sailboat that are on a CF card that can't be copied without trashing everything.

TONY..YOUR AN IDIOT.... WHY...WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE THIS...YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT... 1. THE 6700 HAS A MILITARY GRADE GPS CHIP IN IT... AND WHEN YOU ADD HELMIS ROM.. AND THEN GO INTO SETTINGS.. YOU WILL FIND THAT THE GPS ICON APPEARS... YOU CAN ENABLE THIS ICON WITH A REGISTRY HACK IN WM5 AND EVEN WIN CE ... WHAT THIS DOES IS GIVE YOU ACCESS TO THE CONFIGURATION OF PORTS THAT YOUR GPS CHIP HAS AVAILABLE ... WITH IT DISABLED FROM THE CARRIER YOUR GPS CHIP USES ONE PORT TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE CARRERS SYSTEM... WITH THE REGISTRY HACK DONE ..AND THE ICON APPEARING...IT ALLOWS MULTIPLE I/O PORTS TO BE USED ON THE GPS CHIP... SO THAT THE GPS CAN DO MULTIPLE PROGRAM SUPPORTS AT THE SAME TIME... SO YOU WERE A DOPE ON THAT ONE TONY... 2. IF YOU READ THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE Garmin Mobileâ„¢ XT .....EINSTEIN...ER..TONY...YOU WILL SEE THAT IT COMES WITH 2 CARDS!!!!! 2 TONY... A MINI SD..AND REGULAR SD.... SO IT WILL FIT THE 6700.... IN FACT..IVE ALREADY SENT OFF A PURCHASE FOR IT... AND WHEN I GET IT.. AND GET IT CONFIGURED TO THE 6700 AND IT S UP AND WORKING... ILL BE SURE TO DROP IN HERE AND GIVE YOU ANOTHER BLACK EYE.. IM SORRY... BUT I JUST DONT SUFFER TECHNOLOGICAL IDIOTS VERY WELL.... AND THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AND IDIOT AND THE MERELY UNINFORMED OR TECHNICALLY UN SAVY... ONE IS PERFECTLY OK TO BE... THE OTHER IMAGINES THEMSELF TO BE SOMETHING THEIR NOT... HOW ABOUT YOU STICK TO LEGGOS AND AA BATTERIES TONY.... LEAVE THE TECHNICAL STUFF TO US THAT CAN ..... I MEAN MAN... IT TOLD YOU RIGHT ON THE PAGE THE GENT WHO ASKED..THAT IT CAME WITH A MINI SD CARD.... AND YOU TOLD HIM IT DIDNT... WHAT A DORK... NOW..FOR ACCESSING THE PORT CONFIGS FOR THE GPS CHIP...THERE IS A FREE PROGRAM THAT DOES THAT...IVE DOWNLOADED IT ONCE BEFORE...SO WHEN I GET THE HARDWARE...IF THEIR SOFTWARE OR FIRMWARE DOESNT SOLVE THE INSTALL TO THE INTERNAL GPS CHIP.. ILL FIGURE OUT THE PORT CONFIG AND POST IT HERE SO THAT ALL CAN USE IT... ITS REALLY A PRETTY SIMPLE OPERATION TO DO WITH THE CONFIG PROGRAM THATS AVAIL... IN FACT..IT WOULD BE AN OUTSTANDING ADDITION TO THE KITCHEN.... BUT IM NOT A KITCHEN PERSON... SO ILL LEAVE THAT TO OTHERS WHO KNOW HOW.... ADIOS FOR NOW...BACK WHEN ITS WORKING... |
Moderators,
Is this type of crap from 'family dog' allowed on this forum?? What a tool.... |
whoa, my eyes hurt.
If this is true, which I swear after reading the debates going around months ago it was gen. consensus it wasn't, then why aren't all the 6700 gods using this already? This would eliminate the need for the 200+ dollar "toy" I just bought. |

TomTom Copilot Live info
TomTom 6 works great on my phone and has caused no problems. The other software I tried is Copilot Live although it works it crashes my phone and reboots are often required due to the product. I would advise staying away from Copilot Live.
The only thing I miss in TomTom is text to speech. It tells you where to turn but not the name of the road you must look at the display for that info. I hope this helped Joe |
Joe,
What are you using for a gps receiver? Thanks, Christian |
I use copilot live and have never crashed my phone. I use the BT338 from globalsat
|
I am using the Arkon bt339 gps receiver
the link to the page is http://www.arkon.com/gps.php hope this helps joe |
Really intriged by putting mapping on my vx6700 and considering buying a bluetooth receiver and the maping software. After pricing these items and considering the setup issues, battery issues, memory card issues, viewing size of the pda screen, input ease, dont really think its worth it when you can buy a good gps stand alone unit new for $150 on sale. Am i wrong with this assesment? Be nice if you could get the receiver and software for 50$ but the cost for decent stuff is aproaching the stand alone unit price.

I got a RikalineBT GPS receiver for ~$30 on eBay earlier this year. Works great.

External Bluetooth GPS works pretty well with the 6700's. My advice would be to pick up an external BT GPS and try out MS Live or Google mapping services. They can both use GPS to show where you are and do navigation for free. The one downside I've run into with google is that if you drop your data connection, it shuts down and you have to restart it. Haven't seen that happen with MS Live service. Good Luck! |

what ones are you using? |
TomTom 6 works well for me with a GPT-801 receiver
http://www.gopass.com.tw/Product/GPT...S_receiver.htm but as was said, a stand-alone GPS device is probably the better choice since the cost of software and receiver for your phone is ~$150 and you will have to remember to bring that BT receiver with you too. Wish there were more phone models like the TyTN II with built-in GPS around! |

I use iGuidance with an OnCourse receiver I picked up from buygpsnow.com for $50. The OnCourse receiver replaced a GlobalSat that wouldn't charge any more. The reason I like running the gps through my phone is that I can run lots of different programs - AstroNavigator, BackCountry Navigator, Globe, etc. - all using the gps at the same time. I wouldn't be able to do any of that with a standalone. - sheureka

My recommendation re: stand alone nav unit vs. nav on the 6700 is what are you wanting to use it for?
If you're travelling a lot (by plane) and want something portable that you're going to bring along anyway, I'd say the phone will work well enough - get a cheap BT GPS unit and go. Particularly if you're talking about travelling to places where your phone with data plan will work - there are plenty of free options that work well enough - including turn-by-turn directions (just not voice commands). I went to Albuquerque for a conference recently and used MS Live nav directions with the GPS very successfully. BT unit fit in my laptop bag w/no problems and chucking both the phone and GPS into cup holders in my rental car worked ok too. Now, if you can get/use the Tytn-II that's even better with built-in GPS - nothing extra to carry along (just bring the car charger). If you're talking about something for your car, I'd get a stand alone unit and mount it accordingly. I use BackCountry navigator on the phone for off-roading and it works pretty well for that, but if I get an incoming call, it tends to mess things up and get annoying. If I was driving on a 6 hr trip and calls keep interrupting my nav it would get annoying fast. Stand alone unit works much better for regular day-to-day use. That's my 2 cents. I know others have used iGuidance and TomTom and seem happy enough though. I just think it's too difficult to multi-task on the phone while trying to drive to have to deal with phone calls and the nav all on the phone. PS: I've got a Nokia BT unit that I found on clearance at CompUSA. It's about 1/4 the size of the phone and probably will outlast the phone battery. I'd get anything cheap either locally or online and not particularly spend extra for the latest and greatest hardware. |
