WModem won't connect (WM6.1)

I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and might possible know how to resolve it. When I bring up WModem, I select USB as the connection type, then i hit Start, then proceed to connect with the USB cable. This is how i've done it hundreds of times as instructed on these forums and it has always worked before. With a recent flash though, when i hit Start, no data connection exists. The Connection indicator inside WModem does not flash and in my Comm Manager, the Data Connection button is clearly not active either, it is grayed out and I cannot activate it.

I also tried initiating data connection by starting up PIE for example which works, but then i try to hit Start back in WModem and it tells me to end "data call" first.

Is there something i'm doing wrong? Has anyone else had this problem? Any help is much appreciated.
