ok, is there an app I can load from a cab that will unlock extrom so I can save what's in there? I have it checked off as an addition to my next ROM. I see guru mentions an archive above that will let me blank it......but I should save what's there first.........what was extrom used for in WM5 that it's no longer used for in WM6?

First off you can check out this thread http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=1258

I believe this is the registry edit to unlock it without having to cook new ROM.

Sarge,
It's not really WM5 versus WM6. More like carrier-rom versus kitchen rom.

The extended rom on the 6700 is a 9.9 MB flash partition that is set aside strictly for carrier (i.e. phone company) customizations that run after every hard reset. For Verizon, this includes the Arcsoft mms app and a number of cabs that set up your phone provisioning etc. For Sprint, it includes no mms app and a bunch of of junkware that nobody wants in addition to the basic provisioning. The kitchen now includes the good parts of the extended roms within the basic OS build, so there is absolutely no need to keep the extended rom intact.

I unlock it and install programs there.

That's thread's kind of overkill for most WM6 users. It was written back in the early days.

The ext_rom holds additional applications, files, and registry settings your carrier customizes your phone with. Some of them are useful, mostly it's crapware. The good parts were extracted and bundled into the carrier OEMs in the kitchen, or if it's a useful application, into an OEM. All of this makes the original ext_rom contents pretty much useless (and problematic in the case of some files and registry settings).

To back it up, just unhide and copy the contents off using. Or, you can always extract the ext_rom image from your carriers ROM update - then you can flash it back any time you want. But it's only useful for educational purposes or returning your phone to stock.

ah dood it with the reg edits.....pretty slik.... 10 megs........tank ah.

I noticed tho that a soft reset puts all that crap back into ext_rom.

I tried to install TC into ext_rom and it didn't work..........so I did a soft reset and went back to look and all the junk was back. I'll try putting some music in there to see what happens.

Usually it's filled with carrier customizations and bloatware, like the little app that disables deleting all the Sprint stuff. I use mine as an extra storage card, and use Memory Maid to clean out the email attachments so they don't fill it up. I am poring thru the registry to see if there's a tweak to bypass the EXT ROM and send the attachments to the storage but haven't found it yet.(big surprise here since those that know much more than I haven't either-LOL!) It's still a good 9-9.5M of extra storage....

You unhid it, but you didn't unlock it. To actually delete the stuff there, you have to unlock it - same goes for storing stuff.

GuitarDoc - no, there isn't a regedit for it. It goes to the first device after storage, which is normally your SD card. Sloppy programming there.

I'd assumed that since nobody here had come out with a fix.

1. Include the unlocker in your kitchen build (it's in the carrier ID section). I think it runs automatically if included there.
2. Search for "extended rom unlocker" and look for files attached. I saw a bunch in BigJ's rom thread. This way's a bit more complicated I think.
