3 General Questions.
1) I noticed that this forum is listed under manufacturer HTC, I'm using the Verizon xv6700 which as far as I know was manufactured by UTStarCom are they the same device?
2) Is there a way to back up the current Rom on the device so that one can Recover the device.
3) you mentioned Active Sync 4.5 only is supported. I'm using Vista Ultimate which uses Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1.6965. Will this work as a sync device?

ran-o-matic 01-23-2008 07:19 PM

2 answers:
1) HTC is the manufacturer with UTStarCom reselling. Same device.
2) The easiest way to restore the ROM is to go to the UTStarCom site and download the ROM for your carrier from them. That will be the latest offical ROM. Flash that if you need to restore.
3) I run away from Vista, so I cant help here.

MMichela 01-23-2008 11:10 PM

Thank you for your answers. 3 more...

1) I noticed that my Boot Loader version is 1.00. The tutorial mentioned selecting RUU Standard for V1.02 and X.04+ for 1.04 and NoID for any errors that might occur. I'd like to avoid the error in the first place and yet want to use the most appropriate RUU. Which RUU option should I select for my verizon version 1.00?
2) would you advise i update the current rom to the latest rom available on the UTStarcom web site? do you think this would update my boot loader version to one refered to in the tutorial. (do you have the url to the UTStarcom rom for verizon).

3) It seems that one connects the device to the computer in Step 5. should it be connected any time prior or does it just need to be connected prior to using the update util?

Thank you for your response(s). I hope my questions posted also helps others to enjoy a worry free upgrade.

GA. Medic,

where am I going wrong. I copied the oem package into the buildos file on the C drive and I run the kitchen and get this error: "module ppc_geeks.rar was not found"

1) Standard
2) No! In the case of bootloaders, newer is not necessarily better as far as hacked roms are concerned. Here's the download for the last AKU2 rom for Verizon (older bootloader OK):http://www.utstar.com/pcd/downloads/...0_WWE_Ship.exe
3) As long as it's in bootloader mode, it makes no difference if you connect it earlier than step 5.

Where on the C drive? It should be in c:\buildos (assuming you installed BuildOS to the default location)

com4tably.numb 01-24-2008 09:20 AM

Thanks Ga.Medic this was my first time flashing this particular phone. Ive flashed others in the past, but I was reluctant to flash my beloved xv6700 (amazing how ones modding confidence is inversely proportionate to the cost of the device) Anyhoo, the instructions were very concise, yet free of the pointless info that other instructions I have read. Thank you again, I will be sharing my new found knowledge with my friends who own apaches.

Yes I believe that will work for Vista machines. Do't have one myself but I believe that is correct.

MMichela 01-24-2008 12:48 PM

There seems to be some general confusion on the download/install directories. Is the following correct. you download the kitchen (in my case it was Helmi_wm6_apache_kitchen_071217_1.exe) run the exe which installs the kitchen to the default directory C:\buildos then place the unzipped rar file (in my case it is PPCGeeks_OEM.rar) in to the c:\buildos directory then click the Chef Icon and away you go?

GaMedic 01-24-2008 01:36 PM

That is corrct. Do not unpack the .rar. Drop it right into c:\buildos. Click the chef Icon and the kitchen should open. The only initial error you should see would be in reference to carrier not selected. Once you select your carrier in the dropdown, hit save and this error will not appear again.

Update was successfull with the exception of 1 issue that should be noted. Boot loader v1.00 doesn't seem to be compatable with windows vista. At first attempt I received a 101 Error in communicating with the USB Device at step 5 (Update Utility). This is not an unrecoverable error, a soft reset boots the device as it was. I moved the kitchen to a Win XP machine and was able to upgrade with out incident.
-Thank all of you for all your help. Expecially Ga._Medic, you've gone above and beyond.

jrob 01-25-2008 12:26 AM

gguruua,

i did everything that the tutorial said to do and when I click on the chef, i get this message:

"module ppc_geeks.rar was not found"

and then it says,

"module not found (fd1d0922-0c01-40c7......................), Cyberon Voice Commander)"
"module not found (................................................. .), HTC Smartdialing)
"module not found (................................................. .), Office Excel)
"module not found (................................................. .), Office Powerpoint)
"module not found (................................................. .), Office Word)

You didn't put PPC_Geeks.rar in the right place. Go check where you put it.

Same thing is happening to me. Too bad i don't have an XP machine to go thru with the update.

gopher2011 01-31-2008 05:02 PM

For some reason when i was trying this i get the message after using the green arrow to "cook" my ROM, 'Please place your PPC into bootloader mode and connect PPC into USB cable' or something along the lines of that i do, I plug my phone in them and then it runs the upgrade utility, and press next. After that it sits at this screen that says

'checking the information on your device...please wait...'

and on the build status window it says 'Starting RUU'

but then it pops up and says

"error 101:Connection Error" it says make sure your cable is connected properly on both ends and make sure the device is on. The cable is connected just fine, and the phone is in bootloader mode, i even tried to different cables still the same message.

Any idea's? This write-up is amazing, props to you GA medic ggrusa, and whoever else contributed.

I had the same issue the other day, with my v1.0 bootloader. I've since had to reinstall MDC 6.1, and that has cleared up a number of problems. I'll retest flashing my v1.0 6700 to see if that too has sorted itself out. If not, v1.2 bootloader may be the minimum necessary for Vista compatibility. There are instructions for bootloader flashing in the main forum (in the recovering from 3.3 upgrade thread).

patches 02-02-2008 08:16 PM

I've read through a lot of these threads, but my one question before I try to update my ROM is do you have to do anything to the phone (ie, re-activate it) once the ROM update is done? In other words, after the update, will it work as is once it boots (be able to take calls, connect for data usage), or do you have to do something so it knows it's your phone number? Yes, I IZ N00B to this, but I also can't not have my phone out of commission. :P

GaMedic 02-02-2008 10:07 PM

As long as you use the right carrier, ie. Verizon if you use Verizon or Sprint if you use Sprint then it should work. The only thing you may need to do is update your phone by dialing *228 option 2 once you are done flashing. That updates your PRL on Verizon. I don't know what others carriers have to do.

Windows Mobile 6 only

Okay, this looks like a great ROM.

Now my only question, is how do I just leave everything else like it is and install Windows Mobile 6 only?

gguruusa 02-04-2008 01:53 AM

What "everything else" are you referring to? Radio, bootloader, and ext_rom won't be affected by the kitchen unless you manually added their .nbh files. Applications and PIM info on your PC will all be wiped out when you do the required hard reset.

TBrack 02-04-2008 11:58 PM

Tried installing and kept getting error msg 100. Something about it being the wrong model device. Yes it is a 6700.

edit: ended up getting the no junk version of wm6 that is posted here, works fine.

gguruusa 02-05-2008 01:59 AM

Did you try the NoID and/or x.04+ RUUs?

gambatte 02-06-2008 06:30 PM

What is the difference between this method of WM6 upgrade:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=7671&page=1

and the kitchen method described in this thread. I've been trying to read up as much as possible before I attempt. At least I have found out the way to get back to WM5 if not successful in this thread. I was not sure I could before and that makes me feel better. I guess that the first method has already cooked ROMs and the second method has the kitchen + OEM.rar = cooked ROM?

If I use the first method, I have Verizon VX6700, do I use the plain Verizon version or the Verizon with bootloader 1.02?

Thanks. I'm very good with PCs but a newbie in the PPC realm.

The ROM in the link you posted was the test pre-cursor ROM to the kitchen. It is no longer supported or advised (it has issues). The kitchen is kept current and is supported. Your analysis is correct: the kitchen makes ROMs. OEM.rar contains additional softare (that you probably want to take a look at) to bake into your ROM using the kitchen.

I keep hearing rumblings of people getting Error 100. If you are getting this, please post the carrier you selected in the toolbar, PC OS, and bootloader version.

As a work around, set the toolbar carrier to blank. During the build process, the manual encoder should pop up. Select your carrier and try again. You may have to run the RUU utility manually if you have a x.04+ bootloader.

gambatte 02-09-2008 01:37 PM

Having trouble transferring cooked ROM to XV6700. When I plug the USB to bootloader-ed PPC get missing wceusbsh.sys error and eventually the 100 error with no connection. Also, Activesync didn't connect. Tried to connect outside of RUU software and AS connects fine. Edit: OK, searched for file and located in AS directory. Told it where it was and upload successful. Thanks.

Also, might want to include in must haves prior the version 2 of the .NET framework. I didn't have and the kitchen wouldn't open. Downloaded the .NET and kitchen loaded. Is the .NET stuff something everyone should have or just developers? I was sure I was fully updated with XP.

gguruusa 02-10-2008 12:08 AM

It's something everyone should have. The next version of the kitchen addresses this.

I'm looking to move to WM6 from Sardinour's WM5. My current phone details:
Boot Loader: V 1.00
Radio Version: 1.14.00
ROM: 2.11.20 WWE
Hardware: 0041
Carrier: Telus

Do I need to worry about my Radio Ver 1.00?
A. Found the answer -> 1.00 is fine - choose Standard

What about my Radio version?

TIA

Re: Tutorial to upgrade your ROM to WM6

A week ago I flashed successfully to this ROM on my Vista machine. Several times, in fact, as I checked out different selections. Ultimately decided I want to go back to the older Cyberon voice version so tried to flash a new ROM with that this morning. I get nothing but 100 errors. Everything was perfect a week ago -- go figure. Must have tried 20 times so far and no connection, but regular USB/Windows Mobile Device Center sees the phone fine.

The *only* change I've made on my Vista machine since last week was to update to .NET 3 Framework. I was previously running whatever version comes out of the box with new Vista machines and Helmi's default 2.5 selection. That has to be what the problem is, because nothing else has changed.

I moved to an XP machine and got the 6700 flashed on the first try so I know there's not a hardware issue.

Went back to my Vista box and uninstalled NET 3 and tried to flash again with the 2.5 version selected in the build. No connnection.

Reinstalled NET 3, selected NET in the ROM and tried. No connection.

I'm fortunate in that I have the XP box and don't plan to flash too frequently once I get my WM6 build finalized, but in the end I'd still like to get it working on my Vista machine.

OK. I'm going to ask one quick question that I haven't seen listed here. I'm using cricket as my carrier. In the kitchen top pull down menu for carrier should I leave that blank or select generic?

Im new to this whole flashing process, and I have a Sprint PPC6700 flashed for Cricket that I want to flash back to Sprint. When I attempt to to open the kithen program on my pc I get: "The application failed to inizialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application." Ive tried re-installing several times. Any Ideas?

Re: Tutorial to upgrade your ROM to WM6

I can give a couple ideas based on what I've read here, though this is my first time doing this stuff.
You want to check and make sure that you have microsoft net framework 2.0 on your system. If you don't have it run windows update and get it.

Has anyone elses anti-virus software told you you that a trojan horse virus was detected while downloding the .rar files?

Which .rar, where did you download from, and what antivirus software? PPCGeeks_oem.rar doesn't contain any windows PC software, so any alert about it can safely be ignored.

Just a quick holla to Ga.Medic, your instructions worked like a charm, straight to the point and simple. It's been awhile since I've last flashed the rom of my XV6700.

Now its time to explore this touchflo option to see if it works.

If you are getting as replacement you will likely have to downgrade your bootloader. Just a heads up.

Re: Tutorial to upgrade your ROM to WM6

Hi,

I tried looking through this post to see if anyone else got the error, but it seems like I'm the only one being affected by this. After installing Kitchen, and droping the PPCGeeks_OEM rar file into the C:\BuildOS folder, I get an error when trying to run Kitchen.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...ptor/Error.jpg
Do you know how to fix this problem?
