Right now, since HP gave up on building hardware they are probably the only OS that is not bound by a hardware manufacturer.

I found lots of irony in that.. HP is/was a manufacturer, not a software company. (taken a look at the printer software lately? very bloated)
what hardware manufacturer is binding microsoft?

as ive always said, the iphone & wp7 is for people who do not like or want to customize their devices. remember what ppcgeeks and xda are. they used to be places to go to unlock, flash roms and theme till your hearts content. but im glad you found a phone that suites your needs, it would drive me crazy.

There is more customization on an iPhone than u give credit I think. Not as much as android maybe, but it's highly customizable.

HP still has the Palm employees and they work on software...HP split up its business and is actually even looking to sell its pc manufacturing business (similar to how IBM sold theirs to Lenovo)..either way since they are not related to any hardware manufacturing any more as far as cellphones is concerned it makes them the only one not tied to a hardware manufacturer.

The one binding down M$ is same one that is binding MeeGo..Nokia...I mean M$ gave them over a billion and gave the advantages over others..not to mention M$ promised to make use of Nokia's services in their WP7 phones..so whether you buy an HTC, Samsung or etc you will have access to Nokia's software..so yes that is binding down...
