Looks like that Microsoft pulled the plug since it is possible to bypass their old version check. For those who just missed the boat, you can download from HERE:)

Thanks Jeff
Will this help me with my synching issues? Should I extract this file on my phone or is it for my desktop? Newb sorry

You should be able to use the activesync (has to be 4.5) to install (I did this way). If you really want, you can use MSI extractor and move the right cab to the PPC to install instead. I used it to see why the files is so big. :)

What exactly does this do for me?

I'm an avid user of Office 2007, but sync with my Exchange server. So I've never had any issues.

Is this different than our office 2007 in the wm6 ROM?

Depends, you rom may have it or not. Check your word/excel mobile version to see if it is already version 6.1 in about section.

It provides Office 2007 format support and some additional enhancement that latest WM6 user already enjoyed. It does not have anything to do with exchange server but will now open word/excel/ppt attachment in the latest format (with x at the end).

Here is the explanation of the link problem : http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,137812-c,windows/article.html

A Microsoft Corp. employee on Thursday accidentally blogged about an upgrade to Office Mobile that shouldn't be available for another couple of weeks.

The upgrade, when it becomes available, should solve an incompatibility issue that left Windows Mobile 6.0 users unable to read Office 2007 file formats.

Jason Langridge, who works in Microsoft's Windows Mobile group in the U.K., wrote that Office Mobile 6.1 was available and he included a link to the download page. But a representative with Microsoft's external public relations firm said that the upgrade was put up on the site initially for internal testing and was accidentally made available to the public.

The new version of Office Mobile is expected to become available very soon, probably within the next two weeks, he said.

Langridge has not yet removed the post from his blog.

The download page, which is no longer accessible, said that the upgrade allows viewing and editing of Word documents and Excel Workbooks and viewing of PowerPoint slides that were created using Office 2007. Office 2007 was released in January and is based on the Open XML format. Windows Mobile 6.0 devices began hitting the market in the middle of this year but users have been unable to read Office 2007 documents, unless they used a third party software product. DataViz Inc., for example, offers software that lets Windows Mobile 6.0 users read Office 2007 documents.

Users of the upgrade will also be able to view and extract files from compressed .zip folders, it said.

Following the link on Langridge's site now leads to a page with this message: "The download you requested is unavailable. If you continue to see this message when trying to access this download, go to the "Search for a Download" area on the Download Center home page."

I just checked... in case anyone is interested, the Helmi WM6 ROM for Apache already has the 6.1 version installed.

Do you know when the ROM was released? For WM6, the cab date was 9/11 so any rom image prior to the date will be the older version.

Here is the list of cab package date after I extracted them from the English version of the MSI:

Office_wpc_WM5.CAB - 8/31
office_wpc_WM6.CAB - 9/11
office_smartfon_WM6_96.CAB - 9/21
office_smartfon_WM6_131.CAB - 9/21

It is hard to tell which smart phone version is for WM5 but for PPC, it is obvious.

The 96 and 131 are dpi settings. The 96 version is for QVGA or 240x240 devices, the 131 is for devices with a 320x320 screen.
