Our phones last less?

Alot of people at college, at least at mine, seem to have smartphones of one type or another, usually blackberrys or those motorola q's, but occassionally I'll come across someone with a smartphone like our's. I hear the same thing from everyone though, they tend to have more problems and last less time than the conventional flip phones or flat face phones that we had when we were kids before we stepped up to nicer phones. Is this generally accepted or are college students more abusive to their phones, lol.
