Updating A Rom To Get Gps..how Easy Is It?

Im a bid of a newbie to this

I want to update my rom so I can have GPS instead of the external.
Reading the directions It seems pretty simple
I sort of got scared when it said DONT TRY TO USE WHILE IN PROGRESS OR THE PHONE WILL HAVE TO BE TAKEN IN TO FIX lol

So shoud I just put all my programs on activesync and than turn the phone of and install?

Is there much difference on this newer rom?
I have 2.09.651.3

I know its peobably been asked before so forgive me lol
