Hey Amamba
The pics that your Android phone shows in your contacts are the thumbnails of the actual account images of your contacts. Even if you personalize contact images from your phone or Google account, your phone will create a thumbnail image for the same.
This is done basically to improve the performance of your phone. Thumbnails consumes approx 1 to 2 KB while regular images are much heavier, if the device will load images of regular size then you will find your phone much slower.
So be satisfied with thumbnails in your contacts and enjoy the performance.

Install the photo for your contacts again from your phone by editing the profile. The pictures will look fine and I've not noticed any performance issues from it.

Try saving custom images for thousands of your contacts and you will surely find your contact's load time increased. If it doesn't happen with you then you will be an exception. Try it once and let me know. Cheers...
