Losing router hot spot signal

How can I improve the quality of my internet hot spot? I have wifi signal for a time and then it is gone. I travel all over the country, and allot of the time I am in areas with no wifi where I am staying. I could really use some help with this. I just got the Samsung epic ll touch so I could have the internet connection with me and not be lost like I am now. I have heard there are switches under the back, but I didn't want to mess with that just yet. My wife flashes the phones and I am not home.
