I've also read that they refused to offer a CDMA version to Verizon because verizon wanted to lock it down, and that goes against Google's "open source" model. Either way, hopefully it will be offered, but passing FCC doesn't mean it will be offered, as clearly is the case with Verizon. Again, hope I'm wrong on all fronts. |

Locking it down is like, from what I gather as I'm no expert, involves a few things: 1. The inability to take the phone to any other network. 2. Locking down features or capabilities on the phone thus making you pay a fee for any additional software you might want on it (Bell here in canada was notorious for not allowing ringtones via USB on older CDMA phones, thus forcing you to buy ringtones from them, or the very least use your Data to download them, in essence costing you money). 3. Maybe locking it down tight so you'd have to crack it in order for any ability of installing 3rd party roms. How hard is it to crack? who knows. Put simply, locking down a phone allows a cell provider to dictate what goes on your phone and how, not the other way around. Terrible tactics. This is only an opinion I have of what locked down is and what I've experienced. Doesn't mean that is what it means or what they were planning for it. |

Thanks for the info, I guess we will just have to wait and see how things look when we get them!! |

I know in some parts of Europe, it is illegal for a cell provider to "lock down" a phone, and every phone sold should have the ability to move to different providers with no hassle should the customer choose to. Maybe the contract issue was the sticky point. Who knows. Either way, if the HTC Incredible lives up to the hype and is updated the same way the Nexus One is and will continue to be, there is no real issue here. However if HTC/Verizon stop updating the phone in efforts to have people buy new ones, this won't be good. |
