Noobie ROM v0.5 beta

As the release title says, this is my first ROM. Still learning, but hopefully, this should be a pretty solid, fast, stable ROM. Any and all suggestions, advice and critques are very welcome and actively solicited. I want to stress that I would not really call myself a ROM "chef." I'm more of a tinkerer, and have built on the work of Calkulin, Welrope, Maxcy, and many, many, many others in these forums who have provided me with tips, suggestions, workarounds, advice, help, resources and knowledge.

For the design principle, I have tried to keep everything pretty basic, with very little cooked in to the ROM. Basic theme as well, so you should have many, many options to customize you phone to your liking.

Built with Calkulin's VK.

Carrier: ONLY for Sprint right now.

SYS: 21057 (windows Mobile 6.1)

Tested and working:
1) SMS
2) MMS
3) GPS
4) Data/Phone
5) Location services
6) CoPilot and iGo, both with TTS

Should be working (thought not tested):
Tethering - tethering per se works, and is enabled in stealth mode. However, till my next Sprint bill rolls around, I cannot be sure that stealth mode is working :-) Use at your own risk. You might want to install tethering fixes found in various places on this forum.

Known issues:
1) No wallpaper included in MaxSense. Everything will look a little weird, text is invisible, etc., till you add you own wallpaper to MaxSense. FIXED.
2) While adding songs to a playlist, you can only add songs sorted by artist.FIXED.
3) You need to enable QuickStart by running it once.
4) Only the stock MS keyboard is included. This keyboard sucks. You should install your favorite keyboard.
5) VoiceCommand is not working, for some reason. Trying to sort this out.FIXED.

By the numbers:
1) Boot-up time - ~70 seconds
2) Free RAM at boot - ~108 Mb
3) Free RAM after my personal customizations - ~100 Mb
4) Free RAM after one day of use - ~80Mb

As usual, no warranties/guarantees of any kind. ROM flashing has risks, and if you brick your phone, I am not responsible! Please read the various stickies/threads on how to flash your ROM, make sure your phone is unlocked, and please, please, please read up on the things that can go wrong with flashes and how to fix them. I strongly recommend using a flash with Task29 (here) to clean up your phone before flashing this ROM. Especially true if you are switching from a 6.5/6.5.x build to this ROM.

THIS .. BY FAR is the BEST rom for ME...There is no faster, smoother, rom out there compared to this...mainly because there's no JUNK on it ... just maxsense..my favorite..and my apps...dont need none of that slide to unlock to slow it down...dont need a start key at the bottom to slow it down...dont need none of that...just set the settings ..and play all in max sense...Finally A cheif that knows how to COOK...expect something from me buddy :D

Don't know what I would update this with. MaxSense seems kinda stalled right now. I think Max is too busy with his personal life (and understandably so!). And I don't see any great must-have improvements with Manila. Besides, I cannot get the updated Manila packages working error-free with MaxSense.

Also, after running several iterations, I have decided to jump ship a little and switch back to running MobileShell. Its <almost> as nice as MaxSense, and I don't need Manila running in the background. I can run 6.5.x builds that are as smooth and fast as my experiences with Manila + 6.1 ROMs. As a bonus, I have even more free memory (though at the expense of not running the Windows Start Menu). Boots with ~105Mb free. After 3 days of use with no resets, still sits at ~85Mb free. Battery life is a little lower, but that's because I've overclocked the phone.

Let me know if there's any interest in such a ROM and I can load it up.

thats sounds real good.. I havent seen to many roms with mobile shell and I actually agree that It has a little more to offer than MaxSense, but the thing I really love about this rom is how fast 6.1 is...if its one thing I cant stand is pressing new text message button and having to WAIT for it to load up the screen haahha


but Im interested in seeing what you can cook up with that.v:thumbright:

Somethings wrong..

for some reason from time to time the thing just wants to restart itself automactally which kinda pisses me off now lol... I was in the mall today and was in the new texting when after i pressed the screen it just .....TOUCH PRO 2.... lol restart lol

Huh?! Weird. That never happened to me when I was using this ROM. Did you use Task29 prior to loading this ROM?

I'll try and post the MobileShell ROM sometime this weekend. Still deciding if 6.5.x is worth it, or if I should revert to 6.1, even with MobileShell....

yea I always Tas29 lol its part of my flashing routine hahha.

why wouldnt 6.5.x not be worth it though? I mean what is the real debate?

I recall you mentioned it would be just the start button or menu if that is the case, Personally only time i ever go to the start menu trying to get to settings and stuff...after that all my programs are somewhere easy to access lol.

I'm pretty sure there's a performance hit when using 6.5.x. However, it is a little more finger friendly, and a little less ugly than 6.1. So, that's the debate.

If I can integrate a nice contacts manager into 6.1, then I think I will revert to 6.1 again (I already used ThumbCal for my appointments and tasks). I just don't really see what 6.5.x brings to the table, once you start using MobileShell or Manila over the native kernel, considering 6.1 is faster and less of a memory and resource hog.

So, the plan is 6.1 + MobileShell + OverClocking. Should put those iPhones to shame! :drunken:

This is the fastest maxsense I've used and I've tried Big's and Energy's. All I have to say is... good job on this ROM! I'm liking this better than my previous MobileShell OS. Looking forward to see what else you can come up with.

Yo maverick. is there a way to make spb shell have that quick icon links like maxsense has...you know not the tab launcher but the one with like 20 links. I really dont want to search all the time for the program Im looking for in spb...(thats the only thing I dont like)

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you are asking for. You can create any number of quicklinks/shortcuts in any of the personal/lifestyle pages in MobileShell. You can also specify if you want to start the "Favorites" page, "SPB Menu" or the "Recently used" page when you click on the button in the lower bar. Perhaps if you included a screenshot of what you are trying to go, I could be of more help.

On a side note, I have given up on 6.1 for the time being. 6.1 is not behaving nicely with some of the newer packages, and I don't think I'll have the time to track down what the problem is anytime soon. So, it'll be 6.5.5 (Com3 branch) + MobileShell + Overclocking. Should have something out this weekend.

Not at the moment. I really like my current set up, running SPB Mobile Shell with SYS 23134. Besides, there's something not quite right with the latest OEMs and drivers I'm using and 6.1, and I don't have the inclination to troubleshoot right now. However, if you are willing, I can cook up some ROMs and you can try them out? Let me know.

Hey maverick I've noticed a few issues after a week of use. Sometimes the phone would freeze while I'm texting someone or just automatically reset. This also happens when I'm playing Sudoku or surfing the Marketplace. Then again, I do have it overclocked at 748 but I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Other than that, this ROM is so blazing fast! I really appreciate your hard work.

Hmmmm. Which overclocking are you using? You could try running it without the OC and see if the weirdness goes away.
