Well, I hope that it at least has that new T9/ABC functionality...

EDIT: Just so you know, I've been using PIMBackUp for a while and never had this happen before. And it's only the new sms messages that I am having a problem with. The one's that I restored from PIMBackUp are fine.

I was able to fix my contacts without readding them (2 SMS send if PimBackup used)!

1. run PIM Backup, select ONLY Contacts for Backup, tap "Next"
2. UNCHECK "Binary Backup"
3. Proceed until finished
4. Unzip the created backup (pib) file
5. Open the contacts_*.csc file with Notepad++ (or any other editor supporting encoding conversion)
6. Select "Format" -> "Convert to ANSI"
7. Save the file
8. Pack the file back into the PIB file (use zip)
9. run PIM Backup again and choose the modified PIB file for restore
10. choose to delete all existing contacts
11. Let PIM Backup assign the columns automatically (";" as separator)
12. Proceed until restore is complete

It worked for me! No SMS bug anymore! So only one SMS is sent!

* UPDATE: Possible solution to PIMBackup problems HERE (thx go to drake2007)
Manila v2.1 (and newer versions like v2.5) are not compatible with the way PIMBackup restores your contacts. If u do use PIMBackup, you'll most likely face an issue when sending 2 messages after one another to the same person (the first message will be sent, but when u press send after your 2nd message, you'll get a message saying "Text Message cannot be sent"). Those who are using ActiveSync should not experience any problems.

here's the final word on the SMS Issue (taken from Dutty's thread):

Regarding manila v2.1 with sms I think one user who had probs sending and recieving through manila interface as narrowed it down to unicode in contacts so probably htc changed few stuff,

So backing up ur old contacts and using manila v2.1 could give u the sms bug before, probably explained why some user who doesnt get like me as I use activesyc to back up all contacts.

so basicly, if u have ever restored contacts from pimbackup, you will most probably get the sms bug (even if u use pimbackup, then activesync, then delete contacts and use activesync to restore contacts)

if u have never used pimbackup, you're good to go
if you did, like me, you will probably have to delete and re-add all your contacts (i tried this out, and basicly i deleted a contact, re-added his number, and voila, sms issue is gone)

I don't use PIMBackUP to restore my contacts. I never have. I have too many contacts and for me that would just take entirely too long. I use activesync to restore contacts, tasks, calendar, notes, files, music, etc...

I only use PIMBackUp to restore the only thing that activesync doesn't backup and that's my sms messages... So, I'm not sure, but I don't think any of this info. from xda applies to the issue I'm having. It's gotta be something else.

Do you think it may have anything to do with the clock settings??? Because the time stamps for the sms messages is off. For example, I sent a text at 5:51 pm, but when my friend replied, her text was time stamped for 6:52 pm even though she replied right away. Then I replied at like 5:54, and her next reply came in and was stamped for 6:55. And so on.... but the conversation didn't thread properly. All mine were lumped together by time stamp and all her's were lumped together by time stamp, but not in the order in which they were sent...

Nice to have it when you're testing a new rom)

Where can I get this Beta6 at?

I really love 0305 but I have a problem with the device hard resetting itself randomly. I would really like to continue using this rom if a solution can be found.

I haven't had this issue with 0305. Can you re-flash it? Maybe you got a bad flash?

Hey, I don't know if you tried this before but text messages take an extremely long time to restore with PIMbackup. I have a lot of contacts as well and I stopped restoring my text messages just because it took too long. Contacts/appointments are very quick to restore, text messages are what take a long time because as it's adding the messages, your phone is filtering them into their right places.

I've used PIMbackup for a couple years now, I've recently stopped just because there are much better ways to restore contants/appts/texts now. I just backup with PIM periodically to have the data saves, as well as text messages included because some messages I wanted to have on file if I ever needed again which I can pull those out of the backup anytime. Only problem with restoring text messages is my phones never put them back into the threaded format so restoring did nothing anyways because nothing was in the right spot.

Until they update PIM, I recommend using another program now, microsoft my phone and google's sync will backup and restore all that data for you and it's online so you can access it anyways at any time without storing it on your phone.

But like I said, I've been using PIMbackup for a couple years now and I've never seen that SMS problem (Knock on wood,) so I don't know what's up with that, but it's enough to keep me from using PIM while there are many other backup programs that are up to date and updated that I can live without PIM for now.

I've already tried Microsoft MyPhone... That's the first Program I ever used to back up info besides Activesync. But Microsoft MyPhone does not restore sms back to the device in the proper order. So, that's why I switched to PIM. I don't think you all are understanding what I'm saying. The sms messages that I backed up with PIM and restored ARE FINE. It's the new messages that I have been gettikng since flashing to v305 that are not being sorted and threaded properly.
