can you customize the actual keyboard?

hey, i was wondering a couple things. I'm running copper 6.5. Is there anyway to have the light of the keyboard turn on when it is dark out, and turn off when it is bright out?.. kinda like how the screen dims and brightens. I'm guessing this will be quite difficult, but I think that it would be worth it. Oh, it would save a lil battery too!! haha
...or just change the settings so that the light just stays on longer.

Also, could you change a key... like =/+ key to a send message key when typing a message in ONLY the texting?, and if not, just like a "dedicated" key? just thought this would be more convenient... and faster.
