How do I become a productive member of this community?

I would love to provide meaningful input but I am totally new to custom ROM building and testing.
I am starting to go through the obvious threads here and on the xda forums but would appreciate any advice on where I can find good information for a total beginner. I am sure I will find most of this on my own over the next several weeks but would really appreciate any links to specific threads or off-site articles to get me started.
Thanks to all!

READ alot, look at other folk's questions, search for the answers to see if you can resolve them, play with different roms, read the how and why's certain things behave as they do. Then.... download a kitchen and make a few of your own. Figure out what when wrong and where. Once you get all that down, then you would be a pretty productive member of the site.

Build your own, look for common threads of people asking the same questions and build something that adds value.

Re: How do I become a productive member of this community?

Thanks for your feed back!

I am considering purchasing a second Diamond or Touch Pro off Craig’s List. I am sure it has a bad ESN given the $150 price tag for a NIB unit but thought for that price it would be worth picking up to use for testing.
Do you guys see any issues with this?
I figure, for $150 it is worth not skrewing up my own phone while doing potentially stupid things to it while learning how to build and customize ROMs.

What are your thoughts?

If it's worth it for you, go ahead. I know it wouldn't be worth it to me...

If it were me and I had $150 to burn anyway, I'd just customize stuff on my own phone, and in the unlikely event that something bad happens, I'll get a new one, or rather, I'd spend the $50/$100 on an insurance claim.

I am on VZW and my only phone is a Sprint Touch Pro so I am guessing I would not be able to get insurance on that could I?

I'm pretty sure the insurance sticks with your phone number. I had a crappy flip phone about 3 years ago and no questions were asked when I bought my HTC Apache off ebay. Insurance and all other setting to my account were left unchanged.

I would try and call and add it over the phone.
