February 22, 2009 | ROM Information / Community Site Is Live

You may remember a recent idea I had to start a rom review/rating thread. Well with the collaboration of ideas and suggestions from the community, we have not only changed the original idea to a non-opinion information thread (to start of with at the least) but we have also moved the project to google sites, so that many users can contribute directly, rather than have one person just edit one post.

Here is the site as it stands, I am still working on porting information over from the original post.
http://sites.google.com/site/ppcgeeksproject/

The site is similar to a wiki, but with a simpler WYSIWYG editting interface. It can be a pain trying to do extensive things, so if you have trouble, just keep trying different things, or just keep it simple. HTML coding is possible if you are knowledgable in that.

The site will still be monitored by not only myself, but the community as a whole, similar to wiki. If you would like a invite to be a contributer, please PM me your email and I will send you an invite.

There will be no tolerance for unwanted editting. No, we won't dismiss you as a contributer for spelling something wrong, or adding false information you may have not been clear about. But things like erasing everything, adding inappropriate words or wording, or bashing any rom will not be tolorated and we will make sure those edits will be your last.

Let's get this thing a rockin. Once the site is complete with the initial setup and all intial information is inputed, I will edit this post to be more of an introduction for the people coming new to the boards wondering all about the rom.

This looks very promising and will definitely help noobs pick a rom.....but this will also be very difficult to keep updated with new roms releasing all the time. Hope you can stay on top of it

That was a fear of a lot of people, including myself over a long period of time. It's one of the main reasons we switched the project to google sites, so that many people can contribute and update the page. :)

Thansk for the interest tsousan.

I am also asking the authors of a lot of the sticky threads if a page can be made with their information as well, so hopefully they will allow that and the information also posted there, such as how to unlock, and how to flash roms, etc. If they say no, I suppose we could always re-write the information ourselves, still giving credit to them.

I like what you came up with. The comparison grid will be a very handy reference.

Yea, using google sites will allow for a much more presentable site as well, it should be a win win situation all around.

What about adding DCD's kitchen/ROM and Juggalo ROM's?

Also how about a survey + result for favorite ROM?

Juggalo has been contacted to see if he wants his rom included. So far no response one way or another. The offer still stands to him and any other chef's who would like their ROM apart of this project.

Right now we are getting a solid base of information down. We will be looking to add opinionated features later on the future.

Will you be adding JD's ROM?

http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=55471

Have to say that it is one of the Cleanest, Stablest, and Fastest ROMs around.

The last update was on 5-Feb-09

Thanks,

Re: February 10, 2009 | ROM Information / Community Site Is Live

JD was contacted and invited to have his ROM included. So far he has shown hesistation to do so and has shown concerns with the project. He is still welcome to join us and I invite him to take a look at the project again with the changes we have made from the initial idea. If you would like to contact him inviting him to take another look, feel free to do so.

If enough support is shown to have his ROM added, we may go ahead and do so. If/when that happens, and JD request removal, the community project will comply.

Re: February 12, 2009 | ROM Information / Community Site Is Live

What is the exact scope of the project? I notice you it's called the TP Community, but so far it's been mostly based on ROMs.

I'd be interested in expanding the content a bit. I'm new to this, and the community is.. a bit disorienting. I found XDA first, lots and lots of info, but rather GSM biaised. And varying levels of tech skills. PPC is defintly more newbie friendly, CDMA friendly, but It's bit overwhelmly organized- Like all the accessory posts in one GINORMOUS thread. Also, I don't see much representation for verizon.

Similarly, lots of sites list application suggestions, but the more in depth ones give a sentence, if that description of the program.

I really couldn't comment much on ROMs (yet), but I'd be intersested in starting to fill out new-to-touch-pro information, application commentary, etc.

Indie 02-12-2009 10:34 PM

Re: February 12, 2009 | ROM Information / Community Site Is Live

Added stock cab links, thanks tsousen.

The reason it's named after the community, is because it's built by the community, not because it's a place to chat, post your info or whatever.

The project did eventually start of as a ROM information thread, and then expanded to what it is now and will become in the future. A place to get ROM information, tuts on how to unlock and flash. Future updates will include building the site into a single place to find popular free apps and cabs, themes and other various UI files. The idea and main goal I have for the project, is for someone to be able to answer any "Where is this theme/app/download?" thread with a simple link to the site. Everything Touch Pro in one central location. Right now our focus is the users specifically of this board, the CDMA users. In the future, I hope to recruit some GSM users to build a GSM ROM section and other GSM specific info, as well invite users from XDA to join the project as well, but for now, the main focus is specifically the community of this board "CDMA Touch Pro Upgrades"

It obviously won't be something that's going to pop up and be finished overnight, but be built and maintained overtime. That's why it was essential to get the community involved and that is also ever-changing. As you can see though, the project is very well underway and starting to take shape. If you would like to assist us in the project, feel free to PM me with your email address and I will send you the invite.

Re: February 12, 2009 | ROM Information / Community Site Is Live

Well, that's more or less what I meant. Post cabs/themes, tutorials, and resources. Not so much chatter, as organized information, with a bit of emphasis on telling what something does, rather then just giving a link. (although you did state something about reviewing? that involves a bit of posting opinions/experiences with different roms.)

Right now opinion based information has been put on the back burner until a very hefty wealth of facts have been laid down. Opinions may never make it into the project, and if they are considered again, it will be a long thought out process of figuring out how to go about it.

Once again we've overhauled the appearance of the ROM Information chart by porting it into a spreadsheet.

Let me know if you think it looks better or worse than before, or how you think it looks in general at it's current state.

It looks much worst than before. For the "ROM Information Chart" page, the RED is just too bright and hurting my eyes. And didn't really offer much more with different color for each row. At most, may be same color for every other row.

I have normal vision and already hurting my eyes. I bet people who has color blind will be even worse.
Fujitus website here ( http://www.fujitsu.com/global/access...assistance/cd/ ) has a free program call "ColorDoctor" which show you what the website looks like for color blind people. They probably cannot read some of the rows. I have few friends who are color blind and they say blue color is a safe color that they can tell. Everything else may looks the same. And some color look white/black to them. They don't really like people use too many different color highlight (other than blue) in email since doesn't make a different to them and can actually make it harder for them to read.

Indie 02-14-2009 04:24 PM

Re: February 12, 2009 | ROM Information / Community Site Is Live

That's weird. I've of people not being to read or see something because of it being a certain color, but never hurting their eyes. It's usually always yellow on white as well, which was the main reason for the background colors, to have a better contrast to make it easier to read, which I feel it does. The colors follow the ROM themes. Not going to make them all blue because no all of the Chef's wanted blue and their theme. I'll take a look when I get home though, probably due a gray of some sort because every color goes with gray and it will allow the yellow to be readable as well. I'll double check it with the fujitsu program also just to make sure it looks good, or I will add another sheet that is black and white to be colorblind friendly.

although a suggestions/ideas page is indeed there I saw no way to actually enter a suggestion or idea...

But, since you asked, your colors on that ROM table are seriously hard on my cornea's. Why not do something simple, like alternating row colors. Choose colors that won't make me go blind quicker than overuse of Viagra. You know (for example), grey row, then white row, repeat as necessary...

BTW Indie, I hope you know I'm just joking around. But seriously, please do something about those colors man; they're obnoxious...

I've added a simple black and white tab that you can also view.

The ideas and suggestions page are to those registered to the site. It does not allow for non-invited public to leave comments unfortunately. We are currently working on a solution for this.
