(UPDATE 02.09.09) Review/Rating Thread Idea

Please read this post for an important project update. We are still messing around with ideas on how to best go about this, and since every one agrees it need to be done right, we are playing will all possibilities before setting up anything concrete or final.

First off, thanks and props to squishy for the inspiration.

I would like to start a thread as a place where everyone can go in, post a few lines about their favorite rom, give their favorite rom a broken down rating, and create a thread like Squishy's that involves the entire community. A place where new people or people simply looking to try something new can go and get a feel for what other people's rom experience has been.

My dream is to also have the cooks give a short blurb about their rom be provided for the first post as well, even if it's just ripped from the OP of their rom thread. Then throughout the thread, the cook pick certain quotes about their rom they also feel would make a great contribution to the first page as well.

Perhaps reserving the 2nd and 3rd post for special things such as Review of the Week, or Rom update of the Week, etc. etc.

So let me know what you think about this idea, and if there is enough positive feedback, I'll go ahead and get it fired up. I've provided a poll as well.

Re: Review/Rating Thread Idea

Great Idea, although can be very cumbersome considering there are many releases per week. Unless someone is consistently reviewing each rom, this will never work.

Also you have to take into consideration of the "fanboys" overhyping some roms over others.

It CAN be a good idea... If its run properly.

I say do it up... no harm no foul.

Re: Review/Rating Thread Idea

I do agree with your points, this is quite the task for one person and could possibly fail, but I feel it's worth a try.

I would be on top of it as much as I can, I work at a desk and have some free time throughout my day, but there would also need to be assistance from the users as well. Such as providing the quotes, ratings, and reviews of the constant updates. It also requires some input from you cooks as well. I know you guys are busy making things easier for us already, and I don't feel like I'm asking for a ton of extra work from you, but I feel like I am coming from the same state of mind you guys are. How can I make things easier for the community I have been welcomed into and have embraced.

Fanboys will be fanboys, again, I cannot control them from posting here. I don't know if it would be possible to make me a mod of this one single thread or not, but if that is allowed, then I could at least delete fanboyish and troll post as I read through the thread. We would have to seek out permission for that, but again, there is much the users could assist in that even if it's not possible, such as not feeding the fanboys fire and simply ignoring thier post.

Ultimatly it would be a thread community driven. So far from what I have seen, this community is an excellent one. I've been here a week and have felt very welcomed. There may be times where reviews and ratings coming in are slow, but even during those times, at least the thread will exist for new users and even old users looking for guidance in trying out a new rom.

I know when I came into this board for the first time it was overwhelming. Which rom do I pick? Even if this thread doesn't fulfill my full dream, at least it will provide some insight for those that are visiting for the first time.

Pretty much spot on with my thoughts!

To add to that though I have only one other word: Egos.

These guys work long and hard to cook up their roms...they have every right to be protective and to think that there's is indeed the best. If something like this could be done objectively it could be a useful tool.

Good luck....

Re: Review/Rating Thread Idea

My hope would be to eliminate all negativity and keep things positive. I don't want to dog on any cook, because they are all great. I don't want it to be a "which rom is best" thread, but more so a "which rom is best for me" thread, because honestly, they all provide nothing but good. I think we can all agree, that not one single rom is for everyone or fulfills everyones needs, but that doesn't mean the rom sucks or that it's not a better fit for someone else. That's what I hope this thread would get people to realize.

I know I can't control what people post, but I think it would be great if people could limit thier post in the thread to a few lines about the rom they like, and if they would like to contribute a full review, that those be messaged to me for approval before being posted or presented.

The rating system I would love to have would be where a user only rates their favorite or a single rom. That way nothing but positive comes from it. I can only think of one way to regulate this and that would be count the first person submission only into the ratings on the threads OP, and then if they happen to change roms, again, request to sumbit a new rating by messaging me. Everything would be tracked by me in a simple excel spreadsheet. People also take pride in the rom they use, as well as the cooks, so if they can only rate one rom, chances are they are only going to want to rate the one they love and use, and thus a good majority of the ratings would be positive.

In short, I would impose ways within my ability to limit this thread from being a "this rom is better, because this other rom suck...." thread, simply into a "This rom is good because...." thread. People can make judgements from only good things being said about the various roms here. The negativity is not necessary to do so. I think often people forget this and once they see that it does work the other way, I can forsee this community bonding together even more than it already has.

Egos. Well put...

To give you guys a general idea of my mindframe when hearing about my rom. Many people have asked me "Hey Mike, do you track your downloads?"

The answer is simple... no.

I don't want to know how many people downloaded my rom, I don't want to know how many people are using my rom.

It all comes down to egos. I spend a considerable amount of time tweaking my rom to "perfection"

I'd like to think EVERYONE is using it :D
--

To be honest with you. When I see the polls get posted of which ROM do you use, and I see alotta roms with only 1 Vote while other roms are already at 15-20 votes in the first 10 minutes... It shatters my heart as well.

This is the exact reason why in a months time there are only 2-3 chefs left. Because it's all about ego's in the end..

The end....

/end rant

I also support this idea, it would be a lot easier for users to find quick info, and links to ROMS that are best suitable for there needs, and there is a ROM hear for everyone some may be hidden in the back of the thread, and some are in front depending on posts, and this thread would help keep all ROM's at the top so users can easily find info on what they want in a ROM.

Were we waiting on merdin's approval for the sticky LOL

I was thinking of starting off with a rough draft build of the post and then share that with you cooks for insight first before posting it onto the forums, i don't want to do anything that offends any of the cooks. I'm sure none of you cooks would mind such a thread exsist, but everyone is different, so it's always good to check with this like this first.

Even when it does get posted, it would probably just be an beta build of the post. I know it sounds funny giving a post project build phases, but as funny as it sounds, I think it would help some users better understand that the thread is an ongoing work in progress, similar to your roms and their version numbers. My vision is to make the OP colorful/color coordinated, much like the OP of your rom pages. If possible, I would like to include the pictures from your rom threads, or a different one if you wish to provide it.

I also have some other loose ideas, such as a monthly interview of one of the cooks. I guess it wouldn't be strictly about rating and comparing the roms, but kinda be like a cook/rom newsletter type of thread, highly driven by the community. I know this is all probably far-fetched, but if I can gain enough support, it could turn into something great for this community.

I should have a rough draft whipped up by tomorrow night. If you have any preliminary ideas that would be great. Also, cooks, if you would like to let me know how you want your name displayed i.e. "Mightymike" "MightyMike" "Mighty" "Mike" etc as well as give me a color theme of three colors you would like, that would be awesome.

Thanks and for now, good night

I must admit this is one of the more tamer threads discussing competing roms. I'll sticky this for a while until the OP has his other post together, and y'all keep posting credible and meaningful material.

Let's not let this one get bogged down with that other stuff.

Oh phew....when I saw this stickied I was freaking out yelling to myself "NO NO NO, I'm not ready yet" LOL

This will be even more motivation for me though. Some adjustments have been made at work, so I get off substatially earlier now, that and with the weekend coming up, I should have a good version of the thread by the weekend. I am still on schedule for the rough draft presentation to the cooks to be done tonight as well.

Just a reminder cooks, giving me a 3 color theme and how you would like your name to be written would help me out :)

I agree. Let's no get bogged down with "stuff" in this thread. It is a great idea. I for one don't feel like I am competing with the other Chef's. I am doing this for fun... (twisted I know) and I consider most of our ROMs complimentary. We all offer something a little different.

IU agree and will nto even try to argue the posistion.. except about your ROM being on every phone... Everyone knows its MY ROM that should be on all phones ;c)

In the end if this is pulled off objectively and lets everyone submit there favorites and stays current I will support this. But I think you will find fanboys come in and start arguing, chefs like me that get left out, etc.

Your asking for a huge project but you have my support.... if you do it the way I want ;c) hehehehe.

I do think you should eliminate any poll that lets you pick a favorite ROM, instead show us how sincere you are and track each response from the users.

This sounds like a useful idea. IM not going to deny it. What I woudl do is eliminate any user "feedback" about performance. Do a spreadsheet with just "out of the download" features. I would try hard to stay away from any objecvtive measurement. Doing so will ensure there is no bias.

Re: Review/Rating Thread Idea

I never intended there to be a poll, and your suggestions support me in that have furthered encouraged me to not make one. I feel the rating system I have thought up, will provide a fair, balanced, and mostly postive feed to all of the cooks/rom envolved. I will have more information on how this will work as well for you cooks soon also, and will be open to suggestions and changes.

Edit, just saw Scott's post. i agree that a features breakdown would be a great help, I will add that to the to do list. A little info on my rating system is that again, people would only be allowed to rate one rom, which will most likely be their favorite, so a majority of the feedback will be positive. It wouldn't simply be a overall rating of the rom, but broken down rating of different categories, such as speed, features, presentation, etc etc of the rom. This may be axed altogether, but I think it would create a fair assesment of the roms. For instance, one may have a avg of 9 for speed, and another of 7, but the 7 may have more features included, so it would get a 9 for that, while the faster one may get a 7. There are comparisons obviously involved, but I feel that it is a positive and fair comparison. Again, I will have more info for the cooks throughout the weekend. If you have feedback on what I just shared, feel free to reply or PM me.

Re: Review/Rating Thread Idea

IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.

XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.

I hate to be the nay sayer but what is the benefit from this .... what do new comers gain .... what do a person who is wanting to learn how to make a rom getting from this ..... The quote from above came from XDA when I saw it ... it changed my thinking about cooking and sharing ... that is why I stoped "protecting" my roms (that and you can still dump them anyway lol) but honestly I think that this is just another comparison thread just more candy coated .....to keep this real ..... most of the users here go by faith in a certain "cook" and don't really try most roms longer then a week if that . So my point is this is what kinda makes most people kinda shy away from here not because they can't handle the comparison but because of the nature of what is going on .... and the lack of gaining knowledge .... and to throw this out there but the so-called "fanboys" is what creates the egos of most "chefs" so without these "fanboys" where would your "chef" be .... making my point that this "idea" would be biased ..... and somewhat political .... so in spirit maybe PPCGeeks should keep the idea of frowning of threads like these

+1 Agreed. Lets not let it fail until it fails. Lets try to not let it fail.

I think the OP's attempt at reaching out to the Chef's before posting the thread was a great measure of the attitude and possible effort that will be put forth. I think if done in a non political / non biased way this would be a great thread. If he comes out with "Ok here is my speed comparison" of these ROM's... Yeah, its going to fail.

Lets just see what happanes. Coz is already involved so if it gets out of hand he will keep us in line or close the thread.

I'm taking all things said here into consideration, as of right now, this thread will be more informational than it will opinionated. With hopefully some extras thrown in, such as the interview on the month and review of the month. Again, which would be messaged and then approved by me. Similar to Squishy's reviews, which seem to have had mostly a positive reaction. Perhaps alternating which rom is reviewed to be fair, such as having that months review be of that months interviewed chef's rom.

This is not meant to be an attack on you jak, it is just your view of a ROM comparison thread that is shared by others that I don't understand. No I don't think that everyone should have to flash every ROM out there, just to understand what they are like. There is a risk to flashing, or else why would every ROM maker put the "What you do to your device is your problem" line in their thread?

Of course not. Like Cozboogie, his interest is in getting a ROM fix with the least effort. Providing an area conducive to raising the next generation of cookers is somewhere way down the list of priorities.

Personally, I fail to see how the goal will be met for any length of time with the proposed solution. You are going to essentially get post#1 from anyone participating and add a bunch of administrative overhead. Maybe if you changed the goal to creating a template for post #1s to follow.

Here is the post as it stands right now. Obviously it is far come being completed and we are far from starting it on it's own thread. Just letting everyone know how it looks so that I can get feedback and suggestions. Right now the direction of this thread has steered from being a rating/review thread and more of a ROM information thread. The chefs and myself felt it would be better to get a good foundation of information built first, and then slowly transition unbias fair postitive opinions into the thread. This will be done over a substantial length of time and very carefully.

Right now the feature table is incomplete, it will be completed soon. I need all chefs to read their pm's and provide me with the info I asked for please. I also need suggestions on how to present this thread as well. I'm new here myself so don't know all the tricks that a post allows. I.E. Can the code field be made larger? I will probably make a image of the table as well soon, so that it can be seen all at once with little need to scroll.

On my IMMEDIATE to do list are
update SSK information for new 1.5 Final
Give feature table a header
Overall filling in of missing info

Anyways, here it is, please leave positive and constructive feedback :)

"A fast and stable ROM. Thats all there is to say." ~Scrosler~

Code:

I made three variations of the ROM to try to suite all needs!
All ROM's have the following in common:

*Keep your custom EPST settings. Safe for Non Verizon branded phones!
*No longer have lllboredlll GPS Fix V2 although it is still 100% compatible!!
*If you have the lllboredlll GPS fix it will continue to work.
If you dont have the GPS Fix its fully compatible! Go get your GPS working now!
*Built on CE OS 5.2.21109 Build 21109.1.6.0 - Hybrid XIP shows as CE OS 19997
(Or something!)

*9 meg page pool vs 6 meg stock page pool.
*No UI Tweaks or graphic changes. Although they can be found in SSK Online!
*UC AutoRun Capable!
*SSK Online! Rev 0
*You Tube from Diamond ROM 2.00 - Thanks Conflipper and Juggalo!
*HTC Network Plug In
*GPS tools

Here are the variations in ROM choices:
Scott's Choice Edition - Designed for the Speed Freak / Power User
Removed HTC Keyboard, Large Start Menu, Large Title bar, HTC Scrolling (uses Microsoft
standard scrolling.)

This ROM will have the most free RAM and will be the fastest due to the stripping of
all the HTC bloat.

Standard Edition- Designed for the user who wants primarily a
stock ROM with the added speed of a custom ROM

99.99% Stock
Nothing else to say

Deluxe Edition - Designed for users that want a ROM with a
good assortment of extra's

The apps on here are designed to show you what this baby can do! These were all hand
picked by me. These are the apps everyone downloads when they first get there TouchPro,
trust me!

Sensor Apps - Diamond Hologram, Gyrator, Seismo, G-Light, Klaxon Alarm Clock
Utilities - Advanced Config 3.3, Diamond tweak .5.3, Glossy Black Bars,
nueFonts with extra fonts, Sprite Back Up, Diamond TF3D Config .6.7

GPS - Live Search, Google Maps, HTC GPS Tool, HTC Quick GPS
