And i should use nandroid backup/ recovery to save my settings/roms.... Should i delete the nandroid folder on my sd card before i do a backup? or does the new backup replace the old nandroid folder on my sd card... thanks!

I'm really not sure what exactly you think is happening. For the sake clarity and, in the long run, brevity, i'm going to lay all this out.

Rooting the hero involves running an exploit in the system to gain root access by remounting the filesystem as rewritable. The flashrec method, from what i understand, does this by jumping straight to the recovery image flashing (i've never done it, so i'm not sure)

Alrighty, so via whatever method we used, we now have our hero rooted and a recovery imaged flashed. Forget everything you have done so far. It is done. It is whatit is, lets carry on. When you would like to flash a ROM, you place the ROM's .ZIP file in the root of the SDcard (not in a folder). When you would like to flash aforementioned ROM, you boot into the recovery image (power on holding volume down), press the home key to get to the green text screen thingy, and select Update:Select zip file. At this point, you select the ZIP file you placed in the root of the phone.

BUT WAIT! We first need to make a Nandroid backup. Hit nandroid backup, thinky, thinky, thinky-done. What you have done is taken a snapshot of your filesystem. What this means is you have made and EXACT and COMPLETE copy of every single solitary minuscule file on the phone (not the sdcard). To explain that further, if you do a nandroid backup, flash 35 different roms, change your contacts, deleted some system files, install 75 apps, and replaced your startup animation, if you do a nandroid restore, NONE of that EVER HAPPENED. It is a safety feature so you can literally take your phone back to EXACTLY how it was before you messed with anything. I hope this clears things up.

Copy/paste from my xda thread.

VOICEMAIL ICON MISSING?

For those of you missing your voicemail icon it is an easy fix as long as you know how to issue adb commands from your computer. I took these lines out of the boot script because they shouldn't be needed anymore and make the phone take a very long time to boot after first flash. I suppose I'll be adding them back in on the next update. In the mean time, fix your mail icon by opening a command prompt on your windows pc and navigating to where you have your sdk\tools and then type:

Code:

adb remount
adb shell
rm -r /data/dalvik-cache
rm -r /data/boot-cache
reboot

It will take 3-5 minutes to reboot as it rebuilds the cache. Please pass this on.

Your card will always be app2sd-ified. even if you hard reset, go back to stock, then do a frsh flash of an app2sd rom, you will still have all your apps. Actually, even without app2sd, if you flash without hard rsetting your apps will remain.
