[ROM] 05/18/10 | Fresh Toast v2.1 | BFS + Overclock + EXT4 | Newest RUU

Geek For Me is proud to release:

Fresh Toast v2.1 by toastcfh and flipz

Come and get it!

Preface: I just want to remind everyone that Fresh Rom and Fresh Toast are two separate roms.... sort of. Fresh Rom is considered totally stable (as stable as can be at least). Fresh Toast uses Fresh Rom as it's base but adds in a custom kernel by toast and all kinds of goodies. This could potentially make your phone AWESOME-O, but it's with the understanding that it is more of a development rom. However it is considered extremely stable. At this time you can flash between Fresh Rom 2.1 and Fresh Toast 2.1 without wiping. Just make sure you disable setcpu or oc widget if you go back to Fresh Rom.

A note on slowness: It is coming to our attention that there are several bugs in the latest Sprint 2.27.651.5 RUU which is presumed to be the final build. It doesn't surprise me that there are bugs considering our original 1.5 had plenty. The main one that we have come across is a service called com.htc.bg that sucks up your processor. This causes that phone to become extremely laggy and overall run like crap. Go read my new FAQ: Why is my Android phone running so slow? to see what you can do about it, and to report the issue. Keep in mind that this would be a Sprint bug and not Fresh Rom / Fresh Toast.

Overclock Widget vs SetCPU: Up until now toast and I have been pushing SetCPU because it allows us to create a custom file that tells it what clock speeds the rom is capable of running at which makes things nice and easy. However a couple of bugs have come up lately. First off is that it is constantly using 10-15% of the processor when it shouldn't even be doing anything. That doesn't sound like a lot but that's pretty extreme. The second issue is that it doesn't seem to be honoring the settings you pick. I could tell it that I want the minimum to be 245mhz but I would catch it at 19mhz. Or vice-versa I tell it that I want the max to be 650mhz and I catch it at 767mhz. With that said, toast took the time to program settings in to the kernel that will now allow you to pick "automatic" off of the device selection rather than custom. This may resolve the issue, so just keep an eye out for it if you use SetCPU. In OC Widget just go in to settings and click "Detect frequencies" to have it read them. If you have no preference then I'm personally saying to use Overclock Widget. It isn't quite as user friendly as SetCPU, but it gets the job done right.*Additionally*as a 3rd reminder: make sure if you are running Fresh Toast that you DO use one of these applications, and if you are running Fresh Rom that DO NOT run one of these. Doing so can cause slowdowns.

And now it's time for serious business! :)

Features:
  • Built off of Fresh Rom 2.1.1 so all features of it are in this rom (brand new 2.27.651.5 RUU base).
  • Toastcfh's custom .29 kernel including:
    • Brain f**k scheduler (BFS)
    • Overclock scaling from 245mhz - 767mhz
    • Compcache
    • Ramzswap
    • Ext4

  • Apps2sd 2.7 beta 7 custom built for us (it won't move cache by default at my request) thanks to tkirton
  • Fully working camera
  • Fully working light sensor
  • Fully working bottom lights
  • Dancing android boot screen by wrx4memp
  • Removed Launcher2 due to stability issues and replaced it with LauncherPro Beta (a vanilla launcher alternative that works perfectly so far. Please report if you have any issues).
  • Updated estrongs file explorer to v1.3.12
  • Updated market to v1713
  • Updated facebook to v1.2
  • Quickboot works... for those who use it!
A special thanks goes out to all the donators who have been testing this release and helped us find a number of bugs. And of course for helping fund the server costs and coffee addictions. :)

What to expect / how to flash it / READ THIS :
  • Download and copy the zip to the root of your sdcard
  • Reboot to RA and do a data wipe / factory reset (Should not be required if currently running Fresh Rom 2.1.1 or Fresh Toast 2.1 Beta 1. However if you have any issues after flashing and you didn't wipe... then wipe!)
  • You may also need to wipe sd:ext if you are having troubles booting.
  • Pick flash zip from sdcard and select fresh-toast-v21-heroc.zip
  • After it finishes flashing reboot. Expect the first boot up to take a bit.
  • If it freezes during first boot*then wipe everything including SD:Ext Partition. This will delete all apps off your sdcard. You will want to reflash the rom if you have to do this or else you will be missing some apps from the rom. Note that if you are using ext4 then you will need to either re-partition your card or use Godspeed RA to properly wipe ext4. AmonRA will wipe it without errors but it can't actually read ext4 to wipe it.
  • When the phone boots and comes to the user setup screen I would recommend syncing your google account right away. I noticed an old bug creep back in where it gets stuck during sync. This seems to be avoided by adding your google account during setup.

Excellent!! Just what I've been waiting for!!! I currently have an Ext3 partition, that I'm using with Damage Control 2.08.1. Do I have to use Ext4, or will I be okay with what I've got now?

I have the same setup that you currently have now. Downloading on my phone now, going to wipe data, dalvik, and ext3, and flash. Will post back results.

Is the OC Widget and/or SetCPU supposed to be pre-installed on this rom? I don't have them. I think there was a link in Fresh's post to download, but now I can't find that link...

I'm getting crazy freezing/lag in senseui... maybe cuz i have a class4 card? I read someone having the same issue of at xda, but so far no solution...

I LOVE THIS ROM!!! It's fast as ever. I notice a huge difference in speed, compared to Fresh 2.0d, and DamageControl 2.08.1. Programs open instantly, and everything works very well, so far.

How is everyone's battery life? My battery is acting weird. I have a seidio 3500 mAh battery. I charged it up this afternoon, and when I pulled it off the charger, it took a good 30 sec for the green led to disappear, and for the screen to wake, and show the lock screen. The battery was already at 98%, and then I watched it go down to 97%. 15 mins later, it was down to 83%. I have no profiles set in SetCPU. In the Overclock Widget, I have the min/max when the screen is off to 122880/245760, and when the screen is on, 245760/768000. My update interval is 30 sec.

I always back out of apps...I don't press the home button.

Just wanted to see if anyone else has had any strange activity with their battery.

Re: [ROM] 05/18/10 | Fresh Toast v2.1 | BFS + Overclock + EXT4 | Newest RUU

My battery has been doing pretty good. I've got OC Widget with screen on min-max to 245-768 and off to 245-768. I have it set so high for screen off because it seems to take a while to get going once I turn the screen on. After a few seconds, though the thing flies. I've checked all of my processes with System Monitor (free in market) to check CPU % and Times, and nothing is over using. The thing that uses the most at idle is the android system, and that is only 5%.

I suggest you see if there are any zombie processes. I followed Flipz's post here:

http://geekfor.me/news/why-is-my-and...nning-so-slow/

Good luck.

never messed with an over clocked rom before..Is it safe to leave at 768 when the screen is on?

And do I have to leave the widget on my home screen for it to work?

bigfloppydb 05-19-2010 10:40 PM

Re: [ROM] 05/18/10 | Fresh Toast v2.1 | BFS + Overclock + EXT4 | Newest RUU

I didn't have any problems with the previous roms with custom clocks, but they were never OC'd. I am having a problem with this one where upon receiving a call while the screen is off can lead to the android.phone app crashing and me missing the call. Its happened 3 times now out of 20ish calls... I'm going to flash back to Fresh 2.1.1 for the time being.

same here ( seidio 3500 ) but once it gets down to 85% or so.. its still lasts forever.. so im thinking that the hero is not reading the battery% correctly need to calibrate it again etc..

I'm going to try wiping my battery stats. I ran the top 5 processes on my phone through adb, and 2 processes came back at 8%, so I'll charge up the phone, and try relearning the battery stats, to see if that changes anything.

I take no credit for this, i found it on xda, thank avalaunch

it worked wonders for me

heres some help to get the most out of this rom. this is what i do and it makes this rom flyyyy.

1. use autokiller. i know everyone is still in mad about the location issue but idc at all. ill tell you where im at all the time haa. but i set auto killer to strict. 60 mbs free and nothing ever closes early.

2. use taskiller. although i know everyone says task killers are bad, you only need it for one thing.

3. use setcpu. now here comes the important part. to get the best stepping that i have found with both the oc widget and setcpu. when you start the rom, slide the min slider all the way up and down. now set MAX to 729600 and MIN to 245760. now touch the screen and it steps up to 729 perfectly. any higher it will stay at 480 99% of the time. even while sleeping. i get an entire day with this setting under heavy usage.

4. on boot kill all tasks. go into PEEP and disable auto update. this fixed the com.htc.bg issue for me. and this is important to stop lag.

5. with all this i CANT get the rom to lag. i did test this on this rom. i use my own rom based on zens slide. but these settings, apps, work perfect on anyrom with this kernel.

hope this helps!

Followed this and it seems to be lag free... I'll give a follow up at the end of the day.

Thanks.

Well, I still run into the problem of the phone app crashing with the overclocked rom, so I will be lowering the clock speeds to see if that helps. Hopefully it will determine if it is the overclocking or the other mods.

What is the one thing you use taskiller for?

I have an emergency. My phone keeps shutting down and apps keep force closing. When I try to enter root (volume down, home and power) it only gives me the selection to "clear strage and all user data" but doesn't let me select yes or no? Is this a new root? Please help!

It sounds like you are not rooted. Although, I always get to RA by holding down home, and pressing power. See if that makes a difference.

Running for about 12 hours with no problems. I'm using wireless tether to connect my laptop to send this :-) I'm using OCWig @ 246/691. So far I don't have any problems but no (major) gains compared to v2.0 but its still a fantastic rom :headbang:

Oh, and I also updated the radio with no problems.

Any time I wipe to factory settings, I wipe my cache, and repartition my sd card (after backup of course). I don't know if I need to, but having had your same problem one time, doing this fixed it.

Yeah I'm doing the same thing.....I went through every wipe setting (except the SD card one) and re-flashed. I don't think the SD card needs to be formatted...I only use it to store files...not to install apps.

Update to my earlier post - I've been using the rom for about 17ish hours now and it is fast and smooth however I have started to experience the lockups when trying to turn off wireless tethering.

As a work around I tried using the wifi on/off widget to turn off the wireless tethering and that resulted in a freeze up too. Not sure if others experience that with their widget but just giving a heads up. Everything else is awesome!

I must say I was getting very frustrated with the lag while using this rom, I know it's not the rom, it's the sprint rom it's based off of but it was still very frustrating until...........................

I saw this post and now my phone is lightning fast, I absolutely love it!!! It's too early to tell for sure but my battery life even seems better and I am using the stock battery.

Thank you very much for sharing this info.

I have finally tweaked my phone to where it is working really well. A few days ago, I had issues with the phone app. I wouldn't be able to answer the phone in time, before it would go to voicemail. I have removed SetCPU, and left OC Widget as the only over clocking program on the phone. When the screen is on, I have it set to 614 mhz min and 768 max. With the screen off, it's 19 mhz min, and 248 max. I'm also not using the sense ui launcher. I'm using Launcher Pro, with 5 screens (I was never using the two on the end with sense, anyway). With these changes, my battery life seems much better, and the phone runs really well. Even the keyboard in landscape runs great. I still think this rom uses more battery in standby than previous roms, but I'll deal with it, as I'm using the extended battery (3500 mAh), so it's not a big deal. And I'm almost always near a charger. I'm a happy camper, overall. I could almost not get the evo, and use this phone all the time.....almost

Now that I think of it I do have WiFi enabled every time the phone crashed....but I enabled it through the settings menu.

Never mind it crashed when I was going through the initial setup, when wifi wasn't even on.

So now I'm having a few more problems....

In addition to the freeze when trying to stop wifi tethering and/or disabling the wifi via the widget I've also noticed that my data connection shuts down on it's own. I don't receive any notice, I just get an error the next time I try to use the data connection for anything (SMS, web, IM, etc....)

Sometimes I can kick it back in by toggling airplane mode on/off but other times I need to do a soft-reset to get it back.

I really love this rom but I'm considering going back to FT2.0 until it is a little more stable.

Are we able to use the vanilla android lock screens? Or only the sense ui lock screen?

I had this SAME ISSUE with Fresh 2.1, so I went back to stock 1.5 that I had backed up via Nandroid. Great ROM, but I can't afford to always toggle airplane mode on and off for my data connection, especially when I'm connected via a laptop via wifi tethering and my phone is in another room...

so... functionality rules, and without this functioning properly, it does me no good, no matter how cool or pretty it may be... :( bummer, really want a 2.1 ROM that just works...
