Ah! So, I need an actual .img file? The instructions clearly said to boot into RA mode, wipe phone, then put the ROM .zip on the root of the sd card, then choose the option to launch the ROM install from the sd card. Looks like that would never happen. OK, makes sense. Where can I find better instructions on putting the Fresh ROM on my Hero? ( I will poke around here and XDA a bit more). Thank you!

Edit - Or did I miss the obvious and should I launch the install from the SD via browsing to it with a file manager?

Go here: http://geekfor.me/
Download the Kitchen, and do the Auto-Root feature (if you haven't rooted already, which it sounds like you haven't).
After the auto root, the phone should reboot you into the RA recovery menu. You can do a backup here.
You can then grab the Fresh rom you want, and put it on your SD card.
You will perform a wipe from the RA menu, and after the wipe, select the rom you want to load.
Then, just wait.

Thanks! I did root (or so I thought) but I will give this another shot.

Will it hurt to run the rooter on a non-stock ROM? I am running the 2.1 recently leaked ROM: Build 2.20.651.1 CL157175 test-keys

It shouldn't hurt, although, if you are running a leaked rom, you have already rooted.

So, ran this with my sd card containing the zip file installed.
After running the root step (none of the RA options chosen), the phone boots to a red exclamation point... Doht!

Rebooted by popping battery and I am back to the leaked ROM.
Maybe I will try flashing back to stock and going from there?
To get to the leaked ROM, I just ran an RUU but Fresh doesn't appear to have that easy option. So, what am I missing? It must be something simple. Thanks again.

You need to make sure you have super user (SU) access on your phone. When I ran the auto-rooter in the Flipz Kitchen, when the phone rebooted, I was put into the RA menu, with the options to wipe my phone, create partitions on the SD card, make/restore from nandroid backup, load rom from SD card, etc.

Make sure before you wipe before flashing a new ROM (sounds like you didn't do that, and that's why you saw the red "!")!!! I didn't do this, and my phone was stuck at the first HTC screen for a half hour. That was my only issue. But once I resolved that issue, I was good to go.

Maybe I am having a different issue then. When I choose to wipe, I never get an option asking to install a ROM. Maybe I have my sd card setup incorrectly? Its as if it doesn't look or doesn't see the zipped Fresh ROM. Also, I was unable to complete the stock ROM RUU. I'm virtually stuck on the leaked ROM.
What should I consider step 1 so I can go back?

When I go into RA Recovery (when the phone is off, hold down Home, and press power), I have a list of options

- Reboot System Now
- USB-MS toggle
- Backup/Restore
- Flash Zip from sdcard
- Wipe
- Partition sdcard
- Other
- Power Off

Obviously, I went into the Wipe menu, and selected the first option, Wipe data/factory reset. I selected the back button to return to the main menu.

Next, I went into the Flash zip from sdcard option, where it showed me all my available zip files. I just selected the one I wanted, and pressed the trackball in. I think it says to press home to confirm.

What options do you get when the phone is off, and you hold down home, and press power?
