I'm interested in learning how to make my own rom using a kitchen.

I was reading tut made by tobeychris and calc and was wondering if it was the latest sys and everything.

Any tips on what to use and hows to and all?

What do I really need?

I think that far and away the easiest kitchen to use is Calkulin's. Download the latest full kitchen with SYS from here: http://www.myunspace.com/?d=03EA06E01


Start the Calkulin's Diamond Kitchen file once you extract everything. It will open a Command Prompt and give you a list of options. If you just want to cook up your own ROM without adding your own OEM's etc, then just select 1, and then 1 again. It will open up build OS. Then go through and select the items you want and don't want, and just be careful not to select 2 conflicitng Manila files or them files, etc.

Press the play button at the top and wait for Build OS to complete. Once done, close Build OS, and the kitchen will continue to build your ROM for you and just continue through the steps to update your Diamond.


This is a very simplified explanation, but it really is almost that easy.

Couple of things that I wanted to ask,

What if I wanted to try experimenting with different builds? Can I still use Calc's kitchen? Change out the sys folder using blank diamond build perhaps?

Also how I build in programs inside the rom itself? Just move the cab files to OEM folder? (I mean to add any specific programs not listed on calc's kitchen)

Also how do I change the splash screen? (I'm making one for my wife)

It is easy.

Not sure what you mean about "blank Diamond Build", but yes you can swap out sys/xip for older/newer versions.

The boot splash screen is welcomehead.192.png in the Redist_dpi_192_resh_480_resv_640 folder of the sys.

To add new programs you have to convert the cab's to oem's, using OEMizer or Package Creator. They are both in Calcu's kitchen. Or you can have the cabs installed on first boot with the config_operator file.

Most of your questions have likely already been answered, so be sure to search like all good cooks do. Follow some of the links in rstoyguy's signature, and that will get you going..

I actually did search but maybe my wording wasn't so great. (I didn't really find relevant posts to my need.)

Also I was reading rstoyguy's tut but wasn't quite sure if I could do that with calc's kitchen. (since it was already customed and all) [didn't want to mess up my wife's phone]

How quickly things get outdated around here.... I currently use calcu's kitchen, needed a new one, grabbed the first one I found and stuck to it. You can still do the same with his kitchen as well. One day I'll update/rewrite it for a more modern kitchen.

Result of my first build.

EPIC FAILURE.

I used Calcu's 1.5 Kitchen.

Had issues with

1.) Sprint clear digital clock turning into a white block of nothing. (didn't keep time in case you were wondering lol)

2.) Keyboard that I picked wasn't on. (keyboard was touch2diamond with arrows and it gave me alot of duplicate error while cooking [took 40 mins to sort that out])

3.) Splash screen not displayed at all while starting up. (correct size, same name as default and png extension. Did I miss anything here?)

Any ideas or inputs would be appreciated.

what sys and oem's are you using?

i would suggest giving calc's most recent kitchen a shot. i think he has all the options you're looking to cook already in his kitchen. just DL one of the RC kitchens that already have the SYS/OEM/ROM folders :thumbright:

I am using calcu's latest kitchen. I didn't change any sys/oem/rom using as included in his kitchen cause i don't know any better(yet).
I just took out ALOT of things to make it light as hell and it gave me kick in the *** lol.

i would be slow to remove things initially, chances are you removed something you might need. just don't select items in the kitchen and they won't be cooked into the rom.

hopefully intx will get you pointed in the right direction

i basically removed just apps and bloatwares, games and such since I didnt know what I was doing lol.

that's cool, from what i understand the only things in the OEM folder that are automatically cooked in are the ones w/o and option.xml file. (All the "System - blahblahblah") folders.

you shouldn't have had any duplicates if you're not adding anything to calc's kitchen

He's pretty sure. If you install a bad clock, it will either slow down your "home screen", show the white blocks of nothing, show no clock at all, or have 0's where the numbers should be.

Thanks alot, that basically sums up all of the symptoms on my clock.

With this in mind and ALOT of help that I received from Intx, I'm going to try one more build lol.

Any known bug with sys 21028?
I just chose everything basic in manila wise, thinking that it will be the fastest. (correct me if I'm wrong) If certain versions of built HD manila is any good (fast, stable and no noticeable difference in mem wise) I'll use that one...

It's currently my favorite, although 21038 is also really good. I think you read in Calc's thread though that I couldn't get it running with the kitchen he just released tonight, so you may want to stick with the default one for now.

funny thing is even when I picked HD manila, digital clock comes out all blocky, white bricks displaying zeroes...
also weather animations or pictures are missing...

any suggestion on that?

Also how do I insert my personal wallpaper so that's the first thing I see when winmo is booted? Thanks for the inputs guys!

HD manila is just the manila engine. You are also picking a manila style, and it has to be compatible with the clock you are using. For a digital clock you need to pick Darylelv's or Indagroove's I believe.

The files are Default_stwater_480_640.gif and Default_stwater_640_480.gif in the base_dpi_192_resh_480_resv_640 folder of the sys (Calcu removes these from his sys's). Or you can make a custom .tsk with a cab editor or .tsk editor and install on first boot with the config_operator.txt file.

I just spent 4 hours searching through the threads to find out some basic rom building stuff, and whammo, it hits me AFTER I cooked using calc's kitchen! This is a really good one guys, I wish I wouldv'e seen it earlier! Respect! =D>

Inda - Thanks for answering! I had no idea that calcu took those out in his kitchen. Can I just create that folder and insert that picture file? or is there complicated procedure that i have to follow?

screenshots are too easy, on the top right of your keyboard(on ur computer) there is a button {{ prt sc }}Print Screen then paste it into ms paint
