Extremely slow initial build
hi all. Excuse me my noob question. I am trying to instal xdandroid 7.1 for very first time. I followed the instructions and it looked fine first. However the stage of the data.img build where it traces the linux commands in white on black which supposed to take 1-2 min is already going on for an hour and is still not finished.
I am suspecting the sd card is slow, but this slow? What else can it be? thanks |

Common pitfalls are forgetting ts-calibration (manual or downloaded versions) and forgetting rel_path= if the build is not placed at the root of the SD card (within any folders). Check these things - if neither of those apply, try to read what's on the screen and perhaps we can try to decipher what's going on. |
Re: Extremely slow initial build
Thanks for your help. After 2 hours I soft reset it and started all over including HP tool format. This time it literally took 2min. I guess I should have done it earlier, as I had soft reset it in the middle the other time to fix a typo in startup.txt.
This time it went to Android screen, but showed right after start: "Sorry! The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. [Force close]" On the second boot this did not show up. |
Re: Extremely slow initial build
No, something is still wrong. I went to android twice, and twice it crashed in the browser trying to open Google home page half the way through opening it.

Keep in mind this phone is OLD. You're going to want to give it some time to start up. With that said, you're on FroYo, not GB right? That last issue you had with the browser sounds like a GB bug... |
Re: Extremely slow initial build
Nope, I just run Haret.exe and let it go. I have not touched it after that. And in the .gz file it says FRX071.
It did not finish the first run according to the instructions. I got the blue water background, but steps after that were not completed. |

I downloaded the last build from the link on XDAndroid, formatted the SD card and followed installation instructions ( twice ). The initial build goes through the running linux trace, flying green bots, goes to blue water screen, and pops up an error message ~20 sec later : Sorry! The process com.android.phone has stopped unexpectedly. [Force close]" It looks like the build process breaks half way through. After that simple apps like calc work, but browser gets the 1st page and crashes the phone right there. Actually I see a suspicious thing: the XDAndroid download page shows the date of Sep 04, but inside the zip file some files are dated 10/17 or something like that |

Just hit force close on the com.android.phone error, it can be ignored. I sometimes get those on first boot. Have you just tried rebooting? lol. |
Re: Extremely slow initial build
Yes and yes. Still crashes after that.

Many other users use this also without these issues. Have you tried a different browser? Helping you is getting really frustrating. |
Re: Extremely slow initial build
Sorry, I did not mean to bother you.

Hit the force close button, should be fine. If the system is unresponsive, some apps will FC. Again, many people use this without the issues you describe. Take a few deep breaths, and go slowly. Or, just don't use the port. It's far from perfect, and the likelihood of it ever being even 90% complete is unlikely. |
Re: Extremely slow initial build
I do want to use it, and I appreciate the job you've done here. I am new to Android, but nowhere new to computers. If you could provide me with a location of the possible crash dump, or a log file, or other info I could pull, I'd do that.
However given the sequence of my actions I could not find any mistakes on my side, so I treated any deviation from the scenario described in the manual, as a warning sign. I do have some ideas to try when I get home, but at this point I am at a loss with this. I would not expect the default browser to crash on a Google home page. I have not had a chance to try anything else. |

I have 0 issues with the stock browser, other than it sucks and is featureless. I installed Dolphin Mini and haven't looked back. |
Re: Extremely slow initial build
Thanks, I'll try that. Hopefully other functionality is there.

Re: Extremely slow initial build
Before you give up!
try a different SD card, it fixed some issues for me, I have 2-8gigs -SD's, one works the other wont, same dang cards mfg and everything(kingston) AFAIK. new one worked great. |
Re: Extremely slow initial build
Thanks, that was one of the ideas I was going to try.

Re: Extremely slow initial build
Hey, You were right. Dolphin works fine. Found one more application which crashes the device - Google Maps. Is this an anti-Google build?

Re: Extremely slow initial build
Tried to reinstall on a different SD card with the same result. When installed Android seems more or less stable, but few apps crash the phone.

Re: Extremely slow initial build
By more or less stable I mean that once the phone rebooted on its own in the holster. Two offending applications I found so far are the default browser, and Google Maps both are part of the FRX package

The default browser works fine for me, albeit slowly and poorly. Hence I always replace it with Dolphin Mini. Google Maps also works great for me, I use it daily. Reboots can happen, there's still a few outstanding reasons for full reboots. You act like this port is 100% perfect. No one pretends that it is. No one is forcing you to use it... If you want help, that's fine but don't just bash on it. Does you nor anyone else any good. I'd be curious why Google Maps crashes. Can you actually (gasp) describe the crash? Maybe... even... (double gasp) provide logs so we can determine what's gone wrong? |
Re: Extremely slow initial build
No, I am trying to act as an alpha/beta tester who is willing to put his time to common good and help make it perfect. If you tell me I should not do it, I will not. I did find a way around some of those issues ( an alternative application, an extra reboot, etc ...), or can live without those apps at all.
As for the log file: Where should I look for it? |
Re: Extremely slow initial build

There's an application that helps you pull these logs called (surprise surprise) GetLogs. It's in AndroidApps\Other. The most important in this case will probably be the system logs. Kernel & radio won't hurt, but probably won't be very useful in this case... Edit - I appreciate any help to "make it perfect", but bashing it doesn't help. Thanks. Also, this build has been thoroughly tested by many... and while there are some outlying issues, Google Maps or the default browser are not included in there, so there's something wrong with your setup. |
Re: Extremely slow initial build
Have you tried a different modules/zimage package? Probably wouldn't hurt.
|
Re: Extremely slow initial build
Can you be more specific? I do not have much experience with Linux/Android

Re: Extremely slow initial build
Hi, arrrghhh, after a closer look I can confirm Google maps itself works properly. The phone crashes when I try to turn on GPS. Under WinMo it works fine. I have not tried to turn GPS in WinMo and start Android. Are you interested in any logs?
|
Re: Extremely slow initial build

Are you booting Android with WinMo in airplane mode? Logs would be necessary for a fix, but I still feel there's something awry. No one else has complaints about GPS other than it takes forever to lock, and the occasional reboot. |
Re: Extremely slow initial build
no, I am booting with phone mode on. I suspect something is wrong too, given the way it installed, but I am not sure where to start looking.

Hi arrrrgh,
I've done a few more tests. Booting Android with airplane mode on or off makes no difference. When Google maps is started with GPS on, or if GPS is turned on after Maps is started the phone crashes. With GPS off and location taken from the network it works fine. I am attaching the log file I retrieved right after I booted again after a crash. I am not sure how to produce the logs at the time of crash.Attachment 85221 |

Reboot to WinMo? |
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2.2; en-us; MSM Build/FRX07) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)
EYes, but since this is an uncontrolled restart after a 3-5 sec period when the system is non-responsive i'd call it a crash |

You're also the only one that has this issue. I would like you to triage to make sure there isn't a user-error bug happening here. |
Re: Extremely slow initial build
I am suspecting a user error. I just do not know where it can be.
