Some Pointers?

I am trying to get into porting android for my Rhodium, however my understanding of the whole process is limited. I have some basic knowledge on programming and Linux but that is about it. I installed Ubuntu and everything I need for Android(as far as I know). I followed http://www.androidonhtc.com/wiki/Get_Involved pretty closely, and some things from android themselves.

Basically I want an idea what I need to learn to get started on helping complete the porting of android to rhodium. I see people complain then other say well do it yourself. Well I’m trying to contribute. Any help is appreciated.

I was thinking I needed to learn and understand ASM. What I don’t understand is the kernel though and how it works to communicate between hardware and the OS. If you have good references please let me know.

Also I'm sorry if there is thread that answers my question properly. I have done some searching that really answered what I wanted to know.
