Re: Android running on US Cellular data service

metaltech I am in willowbrook
I am using phonenumber which also happens to be by msid (I would try either one of them)
first get it working before applying the permanment fix....
I smoked a lil too much...
tommorrow I will post step by step instructions on what I did...basically I did everything mentioned in earlier posts but used a different termanal, forgot the name and my battery is dead, but it was a blue screen...instead of having to turn on and off airplane mode...inconsole after applying everything I typed exit
and it restarted my data connection (not sure if this is linked but it did it twice now)

take a deap breathe and start over...use your phone number but in options.smd1 use: user phone#@uscc.net..
reread everything again...The first 2 times i was certain i did everything right and it didnt work for me..I took a step back, waited a few hours (got busy at work) went back reread everything and tried a third time and it worked...even though I was certain I did everything correct...I must of missed something....sometimes its best to just start over
peace

Re: Android running on US Cellular data service **Solved for most***

Ok guys... Got a problem for ya! Rooted phone... Motorola Droid A855 and I have Gscript installed. Im in Iowa on a US Cellular Network.

Im trying to run the usccfix and I get this: stderr: bad mode
stderr: bad mode
stderr: cannot create /etc/ppp/pap-secrets:
read-only file system
stderr: cannot create /etc/ppp/options.smd1:
read-only file system
stderr: busybox: not found
stderr: busybox: not found

What the heck? Anyone know what this could be. So far all I can gather is it really doesnt matter what I change the usccfix file to it must be that somehow I dont have permission.

Someone else had a Droid on US Cellular and had the same type of problem. I recommended to download and try Android Terminal Emulator then to begin by entering the 'su' command and manually trying the steps. Since the files on your device are native in ROM you might try to copy them on to the SD card edit them then copy the files back. I have had to do this with Windows Mobile files in ROM before and it may be the same issue.

One other option is to change the settings under Settings, Wireless & networks, Mobile networks, Access Point Names then update the username and password to what is in the pap-secrets file.

Did you try to update the APN information with a username of msid@uscc.net and a password of msid? (e.g. 6414251234@uscc.net and 6414251234)

Since you have a native Android phone you most likely need to change settings in the phone programming.

Check out this link from HowardForums. Specifically the bottom of the first post.

http://www.howardforums.com/printthread.php?t=1643218

Here are what I think the changes should look like to you...

Name: USCC
APN: internet
Proxy:
Port: 80
Username: yourMSID@uscc.net
Password: yourMSID
Server:
MMSC: http://mmsc1.uscc.net/mmsc/MMS
MMS Proxy:
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 000
Authentication Type: PAP or CHAP
APN type: <Not set>

U.S. Cellular in Iowa. Got the data working with your instructions... thank you very much this has been much anticipated. Now like the last post I would like to see the ringer and /or volume at all to work.

Re: Android running on US Cellular data service

hey everyone, im on metropcs and i tried
MSID@uscc.net * MSID but didn't work, tried it with the phone number but didn't work. one thing i noticed is that there was no place for a password
settings for metro are typically user: number@mymetropcs.com pass: metropcs

any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated

in your pap-secrets try using "metropcs" instead of your MSID and see... it is format:

USER SERVER PASS

usually we replace server with "*" and it works, but maybe this is also something we can try changing? (note: i don't know what i'm talking about)

So try:

number@mymetropcs.com * metropcs

as your /etc/ppp/pap-secrets, with the same
user number@mymetropcs.com

in options.smd1. Or try it without adding anything to options.smd1. Be creative, try everything you can.. if you figure it out, you'll help all the other MetroPCS people who may be in your shoes...

PS.. there is a carrier wiki here: http://www.androidonhtc.com/wiki/Car...twork_settings
But it has nothing for MetroPCS... in general we should try to bring it up to speed as best we can...

thanks for ur advice. i tried using metropcs as pass instead of the msid but nothing, tried options.smd1 with the num@mymetropcs.com and without anything but nothing worked. tried removing the " * " from the pap-secrets and didn't do anything.
i have 2 tests today and tomorrow so maybe by tomorrow night i'll put some more effort into it and get back.. i wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that metropcs doesn't have 3G only 1x

Good Q (1x vs 3G)... I doubt it, but I can try to find out for you. Instead of removing the "*" is there a server you could try to put there in the place of *? I'm afraid I suggest you bite the bullet and look into getting "adb" and using "logcat" to debug your setup in more depth =/ Look for anything "pppd" in logcat and also have a 'logcat -b radio' open in another window when you are making your changes in /etc/ppp and turning airplane on/off. Goodluck... do any MetroPCS people have this working?
