Re: [1/25/2010] Google Android for TP2 CDMA [In Dev]

someone should setup a ftp site for exchange of source code files so that the various devs can get at the latest changes.

Re: [1/25/2010] Google Android for TP2 CDMA [In Dev]

I have a home server with a 10Mb connection (10 up and 10 down) that I have offered to Civic, and will offer to anyone else wanting to help. I have a server with a spare 50GB or so (more like a spare 1TB, but that is overkill) if anyone is interested. I will happily create accounts and give you each permissions to read and write to your individual folders as well as anything else you need.

I'm a Systems Administrator for a hospital and this is kind of like a side project that I have shelved because I am working on my bachelors. Currently, the server just does backups of our PC's, so its doing nothing most of the day. If anyone is interested, please send me a PM.

Oh, and before you ask, yes, what you put into the server will stay private until you release it. I personally will not even look in the folders unless either asked to by the owner, or you start uploading pr0n (that I already have, If I don't have it, then we might be able to come to an arrangement. )
This post has been thanked 5 times.

Re: [1/25/2010] Google Android for TP2 CDMA [In Dev]

That is awesome you are willing to do that and thank have been given. But it kind of misses the point, we need openly available files too that anyone can help develop, an overall melting pot for all the coders to feed into. Now if the individual devs want separate areas to protect the stuff they are working on, that's all good too, but maybe have a weekly build done by whoever that would piece together the various devs work.

Re: [1/25/2010] Google Android for TP2 CDMA [In Dev]

Well, I have always wanted an excuse to setup a sharepoint server or something similar. Give me some ideas on what you as devs would want to use as a platform. I have a spare PC, an internal gigabit network and a technet plus subscription, so if its microsoft, I got it for free. Can always use the other server as pointed storage spare as wlel.

Re: [1/25/2010] Google Android for TP2 CDMA [In Dev]

All the projects I have been on that have alot of collaboration use an SVN(subversion) server. I just setup a new server the other day for a project at work. SVN servers are offered by Google Code for free I believe. They are however also very easy to setup yourself.

That is a great contribution, Lord Delmar. I hope the devs are willing to take advantage. It can't get much easier than that. Great idea.

Re: [1/25/2010] Google Android for TP2 CDMA [In Dev]

Cool. I will say however, make sure you get civic involved in the setup if possible. If this is going to work we need our main developer to be involved. It would be good if we could setup the server with the current version he is working off of. The advantage to SVN is that you can revert to older code version VERY easily. He may not be ok with collaboration like this because it can be very easy to end up with a non-working build that was not the fault of civic. This could easily be remedied by him rolling back the version of one of the files to a known working copy but it adds a layer of confusion for him as someone may have made changes in an area he is working on. It is my suggestion that you keep the list of users who can modify the code to a very small group of people who have demonstrated knowledge of what they are doing.

One of the awesome benefits of SVN is a non contributing member could download the source and modify it, locally on their machine, to play around with. If someone, who has access, commits changes this user can simply run an "svn update" and download all of the changes that were made since the last time they updated. If they happen to solve a known problem they can do an easy diff between the build they started with and theirs and propose specific changes to solve that problem. Then someone, who has access, can commit those changes to the current working build and decide if that person should be allowed access to commit changes themselves.
