Slingplayer Mobile for Android Released! 6/22/10

Update: Slingplayer for android has been released, 6/22/2010. It will cost $30, just like the winmo version. http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/21/s...-you-for-30-st

For us peeps on WinMo that know and love slingplayer mobile.
Here's a video showing what it will look like on the EVO 4G... This is one of the reasons that i factored into getting an android device.

How often do they update those Slingboxes because those things aren't cheap at all?! I'd almost rather use my old computer with the tv tuner in it!

When you think about it, yeah the slingbox hardware is pricey but its a one time fee. You can use it as much as you want when ever you want without any further charges. The mobile app will probably cost $29.99 but the pc software is free. The bottom line is, to me and alot of users, it is definitely worth it.

Re: Slingplayer Mobile Running on EVO 4g!

since sprint is promoting this phone as a media superphone, it would be smart for them to work on some kind of promotion with sling. obviously since not everyone has a slingbox, it shouldnt come prinstalled. but maybe offering some sort of discount for the software with the purchase of an evo could be enough to persuade some people who are still on the fence about getting the phone.

Re: Slingplayer Mobile Running on EVO 4g!

I had sling player on my Palm Centro, then TP, and now TP2. This is a GREAT app and puts Sprint TV to shame.

For those who already have slingplayer on their mobile most likely wont have to pay for the Android version as long as you still have your slingbox key. When I went from Palm OS to WM I simply put in the same slingbox key and had no problems. Your licensing the mobile software and its not locked to any particular OS.

@Newguy, you have to catch the deals. I bought my Sling Solo back in early 08 and paid $134 brand new in the box from Buy.com when they were charging about $175 everywhere else. Check ebay or craigslist for deals cause like themuffinman has stated, you pay a one time upfront fee for the hardware and only pay extra if you want the mobile software (desktop version is free and now you can stream directly from the site).

I tend to think the opposite will be true. Going from WM to iPhone/iPod Touch requires you to pay the whole fee again because the app store is the sole means of distribution. Sling doesn't have the power to give free or discounted apps to certain individuals through Apple's model. I would think that they would also want to use Android's app store for distribution. Unless they were to make a separate apk available from their own site... possible, but seems unlikely since they'd need a separate copy protection mechanism.

Damn it, I never even knew about this app! Makes me even more pumped to get the phone now! Is there any real sense in getting the HD pro? It says it downgrades the video to your phone. Also I have an HDMI coming out of my digital cable box, will the component video out mess with my HDMI when I'm watching tv at home? Where is the best place to buy one from? Thanks for pointing this out, I'm cheesin just thinking about it! \\:D/

if the key for the winmo app works for the android app, there will be other means of getting the apk if it's only available through the market. And i don't have a problem with that because your key can only work on one device at a time. Instead of using it on my tp2, i'd be using it on an EVO.

Re: Slingplayer Mobile Running on EVO 4g!

I read on the slingcommunity forum that their android app is going to require a Sling solo or Pro HD. The old Pro and A/V Player won't work. They were saying the processor in the old models can't hand the bitrate or some crap. IDK This is some B.S. but whateva. Hopefully just a rumor, but their notification sign up at their website adds doubt that it's a rumor. It asks which kind of sling box you have. PRO HD, Solo, or Older Slingbox. Everyone needs to go sign up and say they have an older slingbox so maybe they'll support it.

Did anyone else notice they're using an aftermarket stand. What happened? Sprint's PREMIUM kickstand didn't work too well? Haha. Just though I'd point it out.

the pro hd has a tuner built in, so you want that if you're using a shared cable or sat tv box. you can watch whatever on your phone or pc and not interfere with the tv at home.

I think that stand workd better for the purpose of using the touch screen without the phone moving back each time he hits it without having to hold it. Remember the kickstand is only on one side so there is only but so much pressure it can take without moving.

I'm calling shenanigans on that crap! There is no reason why Slingmedia can't work to give you partial refunds after buying something from any of the app stores. They just don't want to, if you can only use one device at a time to watch the content, then why are they charging you full price for each type of device you have? For example, I have 2 EVOs (on the way), my wife has a Blackberry for work and we share an iPod touch. That's $120 freakin' dollars for the all the players that I would like, even know I can only use 1 of them at any time. In MY ideal world, lets say that I buy the iPod player first and provide them with proof of purchase, then buy the Android app (at full price) and send a letter to customer service, I should be able to at least get a refund of the price minus the commission that the App store skims off the top, AFTER slingmedia gets paid back from the APP store. So out of the $30 paid out of pocket price, I'd be happy with a $25 refund per device back, that's a saving of $80 in my example.

I'm just sick of the nickle and diming being done to us all the time, the actual fee for the mobile devices should be in the purchase of the slingbox itself, and a small administrative fee for each of the downloaded APP stores, maybe $5 a piece...

Damn I didn't even know this existed for a mobile phone. All this time and I could have been streaming my TV to my phone! I'm going to have to look into getting a Slingbox now. Would have come in real handy for all the hockey games I missed this season because I wasn't at home.

Sup akayareal, i've had the slingbox pro since the htc mogul came out. But, ever since we had to add the comcast dta digital adapter box to watch tv, i can't seem to connect it properly to have channel control from my mobile or laptop device. Is there any way you can tell me how you hooked yours up?? thanks in advance!*touch pro 2 owner getting my evo tomorrow!* :)
