I've always done the three full charge/discharge cycles whenever I get a new phone and I always end up with a better battery than everyone else so obviously, its working for me.
As a matter of fact, I've never replaced the original battery on ANY of my phones, while I've had a number of friends that go through batteries like girlfriends (about 3-6 times a year)
