Lithium ion chemistry prefers non-deep cycles, so for longevity, it is best not to discharge them fully. In fact, the charge controller actually blocks a total discharge, as that could actually damage the cells.

Deep cycles are only useful for calibrating the charge controller occasionally. (The voltage curve when the battery is draining varies slightly over time as the battery wears.)

That said... in real life, deep charges aren't that big a deal. Batteries are cheap. Just do what gets you the best use of the phone. Maybe an occasional full discharge if you don't get those every so often.
