i'm kind of retarded, and not real sure what is 'hard reset', 'soft reset', or 'off'. i was under the impression that 'off' was half way through 'soft reset'.
i will sometimes power down (if that is what you call it when you hold power long enough for the little screeny to come up and give you a warning about data loss) if i think my machine is getting goofy because of too many programs being up, started, turned off, then restarted, over and over. probably once every couple days, but i turn it immediately back on (my idea of a soft reset, correct me if i'm wrong). so, i never actually leave it off.
