GPS Tool is just a quick way to see if you got GPS working. Like I mention, you (and I for that matter) might not understand what all the data means, but there simply being data coming from the satellites means you got GPS working.
With the original V2 fix, applications like Google Maps and Live needed to be configured correctly before they worked. So, if they didn't work, it would raise the doubt between you didn't actually get GPS working, or you simply didn't configure the apps correctly. That kind of doubt could be very frustrating to a n00b.
If your GPS is working, then yes, GPS Tools is probably of little use.
