I think you should just try to exchange it without attempting to disable anything. From my experience, some companies do actually care about customer. I had a Vogue that I exchanged through warranty for the storage card door not closing quite right and feeling flimsy. It was almost unnoticable but Sprint was interested in making sure I was satisfied with my purchase and replaced my phone.

Also, my sister has a Mogul. She exchanged it with ease when she told the rep that the 'U' button simply did not work sometimes. No questions asked, no seeing for themselves, they simply swapped the phone.
