Thanks. I ended up using a reg edit that killafunkinmofo suggested over at xda dev. It was:

Current User/software/microsoft/inbox/settings

change trashempty value to 0

Then soft reset.

Of course it is always better to avoid registry edits when possible, so if your fix works, its the way to go.
