I've freaked about before fearing my phone was bricked. Just start the phone buy pressing hold+volume down to get into the security screen (rainbow colors thingy) Then at the bottom make sure it says USB, not Serial, and you should be able to update with another ROM.
btw my phone is doing the same as yours, stuck on boot-up screen with the red jargan at the bottom after a soft reset.
