- Why does the "home" screen (the one with the time/date) not show my upcoming appointment(s)
- Why is there no quick way to launch opera that I see? And what is this "import your favorites from Opera"? All it does it open opera. Is that what it's supposed to do? Seems broken to me.
- Why is there no tab of favorite apps?
This is just what comes to mind after messing with it for 30min, and what I meant by "can't get anything done quickly". So far WM6.5 doesn't make sense to me so far, compared to 6.1 with manila.

The Home button brings you to the home screen.
The Calendar panel shows your next appointment
You say there's no quick way to open opera, but at the same time you say that clicking on the panel opens opera, so what's the issue? To import your favorites, you just have to tap the right soft-key in that panel that says "import" -- it's not broken.
To quickly get your favorite apps, just tap the start menu. You can organize the start menu and move your favorite apps to the top by holding on the icon you want to move until you see the "move to top" menu. Then click that.
Sure, 6.5 takes some getting used to, and there are differences from manila that take getting used to. When I first started using 6.5, I thought it was lame too -- now I'll never go back.
