I do a fair amount of computer work and coding, so my assumption is that Opera would not be loaded into memory at boot unless it was doing something (just making it appear to load faster when you click on it is not sufficient justification to load it on bootup). With that said, I am not sure what Opera is doing in the background, but I can write an app that has 3 or 4 lines of code and is less than 1K in memory that just checks connectivity with the network once per second and it will absolutely kill your battery.
