I am guessing here, but both options you mentioned sounded workable.
The first one seems to work for you, except it seems a little slower.
The 2nd option of a "dual" installation seems like it would also work. however, I'm assuming that when you do a cab installation, you'll find 2 Google Icons in the program Folder. Since it isn't in the "startup" folder, whichever icon you click on will be the program that will be running. I also assume that the new install would be labeled "GOOGLE (2)".....The only problem is that you're wasting space.
I would burn a new ROM in the Kitchen, and R4R is a choice that is available and just not select GOOGLEMaps during the ROM building process. This way you'd have a clean ROM with GOOGLEMAPS in the right location for you and there wouldn't be any questions, plus you'd get the stuff that you want on the ROM, not a "general" choice that Scott made.
I know that didn't help much....Maybe Scott will chime in tomorrow.
If you need help building a ROM, just give a holler, we're here to help. You could also go to Scott's site
www.sskusers.com/forums and there are a couple of good tutorials on building a ROM.
Good luck
