It wasn't checked, in fact, that was one of the screens I referenced - sometimes the icon would show but it would say wifi is disabled via that checkbox. The opposite is also true... if I unchecked it, it would just check itself again in a few seconds. I never played with wifi-on-demand, never even accidentally checked it. A hard reset has things running pretty much ok again.
