I believe when you sync your device, it's actually sharing the internet connection your computer has. That may be why it works fine when you sync and it craps out when you have it disconnected.

Double check the Data Connection in the Comm Manager to make sure it's turned ON.
Also check to make sure you're connecting to the Sprint Network by default in Settings>Connections>Advanced>Select Networks
