all it does is disable the part of the device drivers that when your phone detects that you plugged it into a computer it will limit the current draw to 500mA. if you plug the device into the wall it will charge at 800mA. so as to it being detrimental to battery life? maybe, but I dont see it being a big issue. it just thinks the computer is a wall charger.

I believe this is set up like it is to protect computers, some of the cheaper ones might not like 800mA going through the USB ports. Another benifit for users like me, I tether a lot. this allows my laptop to charge my Gimp Pro (hey its a VZW one....) while I tether. Just pop off the back and set screen down and the heat is not an issue even with tethering for 3 hours.
