You most likely could have gotten a replacement for it without actually having to brick the phone and tell them that it's dead.

I tried in two different stores to have them replace it and they denied me. "Does it still make calls?" To which I replied, "Barely." "Then I'm afraid we won't be able to replace it." So, in order for me to have a piece of equipment functioning at normal capacity, I had to force the phone to not make calls.
