Answering questions is helpful, unoffensive and appreciated. "Read first" posts (for the most part) don't even take the time to answer the question. Worse yet, they usually outnumber the single questioner 6-1.
By simply pointing "dude" in the right direction, WE ALL WIN...or if you don't feel like answering a question for the 20,000,001st time, DON'T. That in itself will encourage others to "search".
