There is no need for the reset button to get this to work. Simply shutdown your phone (off), press and hold the Volume Down button first, then while holding this you press and hold the top power button of the phone. It should put you in bootloader mode (Tri-colored screen). Proceed to unlock..

When trying to unlock and the phone gets "hung up", keep trying. A lot of the posts that I have read show people getting this problem, inculding myself. It took about four to five attempts before it went through for me.

After the phone is unlocked, I recommend flashing from the internal storage, see link below. This helps keep a Rom ready to flash if you ever mess up your settings while "toying around".
