I think it may have to do with the lack of ring tones. The main Phone setting page is the one the keeps coming up and "Ring Tone" is blank and selected

Yeah you're right. I keep my ringtones on rhe storage card. The way to get around you're problem is to go to start>programs>file explorer and copy any sound file to /my documents/my ringtones. Or soft reset and stay out of phone settings.
