Paul, You can reply with out a problem and get it as an sms. When you send a SMS to an email from verizon it comes through like an email on your email program. On the email it self it will say from:
yourphonenumber@vtext.com (if you have used the vtext web site you might have assigened an alias for the number) You can hit reply to that and and it will come right back to your phone.
I am not sure I explained that very well.
So feel free to ask me for clafication.
