I had some issues with Vista and XP last week doing this, but did eventually get it running...the key for me was going into activesync advanced config on the phone, and checking the box...it seemed counterintuitive to me at the time, but the phone immediately downloaded necessary drivers after this and then the update utility worked flawlessly...I can't recall the exact instructions off the top of my head but will look later if you can't find what I'm talking about...should hopefully be obvious though...
